House style and the use of UK or United Kingdom in first use in an article

[edit]

Wikipedia has a house style. The WP:Manual of Style (WP:MOS, or MoS) is an internal guideline laying out the house style of this encyclopedia. The use of abbreviations is covered at Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Abbreviations, where several exceptions to the general rule of "Always consider whether it is better to write a word or phrase out in full, thus avoiding potential confusion for those not familiar with its abbreviation." Among the exceptions are commonly-referred-to countries and multinational unions, which include the United Kingdom or UK. In those cases the rule is "the full name does not need to be written out in full on first use, nor provided on first use in parentheses after the full name if written out." Note that this is permissive not mandatory. There is another Wikipedia guideline which comes into play in this article, namely: Retaining existing styles. "When either of two styles are acceptable it is inappropriate for a Wikipedia editor to change from one style to another unless there is some substantial reason for the change." It goes on to say, "Edit-warring over style, or enforcing optional style in a bot-like fashion without prior consensus, is never acceptable." In 2009, this article was created with a lead that read, "Robert Ramsey Wiseman (18 April 1916 - 7 December 2004) was the founder of Robert Wiseman Dairies, one of the United Kingdom's largest dairy businesses." which was a permissible style, as above. The text in the lead remained that way for more than ten years until editor Neilinabbey altered it on 14 November 2022 to read "Robert Ramsey Wiseman (18 April 1916 – 7 December 2004) was the founder of Robert Wiseman Dairies, one of the UK's largest dairy businesses." replacing the existing style with another but still permissible one. Two days later, IP editor 86.6.83.51 restored the original style. Neilinabbey reverted that edit back to the new style Neilinabbey preferred, claiming "Undid revision 1122246260 by 86.6.83.51 (talk)Edit warring - editor refuses to accept Wikipedia's house style." This was a bit disingenuous as 86.6.83.51 had made only a single edit, while Neilinabbey had with that edit changed the existing style twice. Neilinabbey's edits appear to be contrary to the Retaining existing styles guideline. Before I change the style back to the original style, would anyone, such as @Neilinabbey:, like to comment?  --Bejnar (talk) 20:36, 18 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid you don't understand the history of this user. They have been editing on Wikipedia for many years (at least six, probably more than ten), switching IP addresses every three days or so, during which time 99% of their edits have either broken Wikipedia's house style, introduced grammatical/punctuation errors or weird/incorrect syntax, or numerous other problematic issues. Their edits are consistently unhelpful or, as in this case, completely unnecessary, and are regularly and swiftly reverted by numerous editors. They are also currently under investigation by Wikipedia administrators. My response was therefore not disingenuous, but better informed, for perfectly understandable reasons, than your own. As the editor in question is currently under investigation, I would suggest that the best course of action would be to defer to those more cognisant of this editor's behaviour and allow the investigation to run its course.Neilinabbey (talk) 23:41, 18 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Incidentally, I would add that Wikipedia's house style clearly states a preference for UK. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of this editors obsessive refusal to accept Wikipedia's house style or the conventional rules of English grammar and syntax.Neilinabbey (talk) 23:44, 18 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Neilinabbey: Where does Wikipedia's WP:MOS clearly state a preference for UK? --Bejnar (talk) 05:22, 21 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Abbreviations#Formation_and_usage: "For these commonly-referred-to entities, the full name does not need to be written out in full on first use, nor provided on first use in parentheses after the full name if written out." The list that follows includes the UK.
As the editor in question is currently under investigation by Wikipedia's administrators, and you are unaware of their long history of unhelpful edits, I do not feel further discussion here is helpful or appropriate, so I will not be answering any further questions or comments - I shall leave it to the administrators to pursue their investigation.Neilinabbey (talk) 10:19, 21 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
As pointed out above that guideline is permissive, not "house style" preferred. --Bejnar (talk) 18:13, 21 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
