Chinese whispers
[edit]@Philafrenzy: The Victoria County History reference [1] for the "Empress of Russia" buying Udny's pictures is East Barnet by Frederick Charles Cass; and Cass attributes the information to Lysons ([2], p. 133). I think it may just be gossip, given that nothing of the sort is said in the Getty Provenance page.[3] Most of the purchases mentioned there were made by dealers, and it is quite possible that some works from the 1804 sale ended up in Russia.
