See this NY Times Obituary on this man, "Robert Satiacum, 62, Fugitive Tribal Figure (NY Times, March 27, 1991)." It adds a lot to the story. He was additionally being charged with child molestation and a murder attempt.

LA Times article referenced says "attempted murder of a rival tribal leader", not "former girlfriend".
