Robert Butler Biograpy edit

Robert Butler was a Postwar & Contemporary Artist born on September 25, 1943 in Baxley, Georgia. He was best known for his portrayals of the woods and backwaters around Florida’s Everglades . He was a member of the well-known African-American artist’s group, The Highwaymen.

Butler moved to Okeechobee, Florida in 1947 where he became intimately familiar with the woods and waters of the Florida Everglades, and especially Lake Okeechobee, that feature prominently in his paintings. His professional career began in 1968. In the early days, he often sold his paintings door-to-door or on the roadside. The term “Highwayman” which Butler helped to coin for his category of artist was given due to their method of producing paintings and then traveling along the highways of Florida to sell the paintings for a living.

Butler was named a Knight by a member of the Royal Family of Ethiopia, namely Prince Ermias Sahle Selassie. The Imperial Order of the Star of Honor of the Ethiopian Empire, the order to which Butler was inducted, was created to honor both domestic and foreign individuals who had given exemplary service to the Ethiopian Empire.

Robert Butler early life

Robert Butler was born in Baxley, Georgia in 1943 and moved to Okeechobee, Florida when he was four. As a young hunter, he came to know the Everglades well and learned to “’read’ the land”.  He began painting in earnest after discovering his desire to paint sunsets from the windows of the local hospital where he worked as an orderly. He developed his own “fast style” of painting and initially stuck close to home, finding buyers in local businesses and passers-by. As his family grew, he struck out on the road and began selling from his car sometime around 1968.

By the early 90s, Robert Butler was considered one of the best landscape painters in Florida and owned a thriving gallery in Lakeland from which he sold his work. His pieces were especially sought-after by hunters and outdoor aficionados and could command as much as $7,500 per piece. He is known for the figures in his paintings, especially turkeys, bears, hunting dogs, cattle, and even the occasional cowboy.
