Commentary

[edit]

There is absolutely no need for edits like this which are nothing but commentary and only serve to turn the encyclopedic article into basic sports journalism. GiantSnowman 17:22, 25 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

What does this actually mean?:

"spending a total of three years with them after initially playing for their reserve team before becoming a first-team regular"

He spent three years with them AFTER he had already played for their reserve team and BEFORE he became a first-team regular? What did he actually do in those three years? And what was his actual total time there? I'm guessing it means this (though don't know much about him and could be wrong):

"spending a total of three years with them, initially playing for their reserve team and then becoming a first-team regular"

and propose changing it to this if no one objects. --Ricklaman (talk) 00:27, 4 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Lead

[edit]

Apparently, it is WP:RECENTISM to put in the lead that Mahrez won the PFA Players' Player of the Year because it happened a couple of days ago, or WP:UNDUE attention on one award.

Just a tiny peak at the honours section shows that this is the biggest honour he was been given. But again, it's nothing, just choosing one of around 500 players who take to the field over a season in the world's most watched sports league. It's no different to an online poll , clearly.

Per WP:CRYSTAL we can't assume it will become a footnote in ten years when after eight consecutive Ballons d'Or he retires to become the next president of Algeria. So instead we have a lead where we mention him playing in the lower leagues in France, winning the Championship and having a couple of bit-part roles in international tournaments. Berber name?

[edit]

I know that the issue of Berber identity is highly sensitive in the Maghreb, so I'll ask whether it is standard to have his name in Berber at the top of the page. I copied and pasted the script and the only results were the Wikipedia pages in English and French. Granted, Berber has much less media prominence than Arabic, but I thought there would be at least one article about the most famous Algerian. So either this name is original research, or Berber media has no interest in Mahrez. '''tAD''' (talk) 02:09, 13 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It's unreferenced so I've removed it. If the name can be sourced sourced, and if it can be sourced that Mahrez is Berber, then it might be worth adding. GiantSnowman 07:04, 13 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
According to the new constitution I found linked on Algeria, Berber is "equally the national and official language", but like you said we don't know whether he is one or not. A parallel is that Serbian is an equal national language of Bosnia-Herzegovina, but putting a Serbian Cyrillic name for a Bosniak or Bosnian Croat would be seen as a provocation. Mobile site search summary.

[edit]

When searching for Riyad Mahez on the mobile version of Wikipedia a summary comes up under the name when it's suggested. For this page it summarises as "Algerian football plays for Arsenal" which is clearly not the case (and hopefully won't be). How can it be changed so it reads Leicester again? 86.134.187.193 (talk) 09:53, 30 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Reference change

[edit]

Would be ace if source No.16 could be changed to the original please. Cheers! http://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/riyad-mahrez-street-schooled-dreamer-whose-ambition-knew-no-limits — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jb lcfc (talkcontribs) 13:47, 1 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A fair point, I have made the change. If you are the author of the article, you should probably disclose that though. Robby.is.on (talk) 20:57, 1 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Facebook Football Awards

[edit]

These are (at worst) non-notable and (at best) minor and not worthy of including. Please do not do so. It's a fan vote - nothing more. GiantSnowman 20:13, 6 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks to Ks Soh311 for adding "CAF Team of the Year: 2016" in "Individual honors" of Riad Mahrez. I added it before however I was surprise because it was reverted. --Fayçal.09 (talk) 15:35, 7 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
When you added it you did not include a reference. GiantSnowman 15:41, 7 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I included reference in second time. --Fayçal.09 (talk) 18:03, 7 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
And that's why they haven't been removed... GiantSnowman 18:17, 7 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
They have been removed ([1]) --Fayçal.09 (talk) 18:46, 7 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Oh those? You should have said. Two of the awards were removed as insignificant, and one you did not specify as being the CAF award, so it was also removed because its notability was not then established. When it was re-added with clarity that it's CAF then it's clearly fine. GiantSnowman 18:48, 7 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
However El Heddaf is the most important sport magazine in Algeria and have a tv channel El Heddaf TV wich is too the most important sport channel in Algeria. And every year, Algerian Footballer of the Year and Arab Footballer of the Year are shosen. this is very important event. Same as Lion d'Or Africain where African Footballer of the Year is shosen every year by the famous moroccan magazine El-Mountakhab. That's are the two achievements of Mahrez that I added with "CAF Team of the Year". --Fayçal.09 (talk) 19:27, 7 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Now that you've explained them, feel free to re-add them, with wikilinks to show notability. GiantSnowman 19:30, 7 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your comprehension. --Fayçal.09 (talk) 19:51, 7 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Not Moroccan

[edit]

His mother is algerian, she holds the algerian nationality, it is his grandmother that is morrocan, having a grand mother from morroco doesnt make you morrocan, stop with the appropriation!! In the source cited by wikipedia it is said that mahrez's mother is "algero-marocaine" that means half algerian and half morrocan Please fix it — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.40.83.153 (talk) 11:21, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

2020–21 season

[edit]
@GiantSnowman: You have reverted referenced edits with no reason other than reaching a "consensus for inclusion", you are the only one who is against the inclusion. Why did not you start a discussion here before reverting the edits three times including twice in a row?! You seem like an experienced editor but you misjudged this one, hope you let us re-add the content without any deluded counter-arguments. 176.198.183.23 (talk) 16:50, 30 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@GiantSnowman: If you do not answer, then your edits would be considered disruptive, and I would re-add the content in two days if you do not reply with a reasonable answer. 176.198.183.23 (talk) 17:03, 30 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Why is inclusion of this event notable? We are an encyclopaedia, not a sports almanac. Where is the significant coverage of the goal beyond a match report? GiantSnowman 17:06, 30 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@GiantSnowman: Each section includes the highlights of the season, this event is considered a personal achievement, in which scoring at this stage will always be remembered. Lots of articles include goals in competitions which are far less important. According to your point of view, then the whole season would end with only one sentence which is totally absurd. 176.198.183.23 (talk) 17:27, 30 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Again - says who? We rely on coverage in reliable sources, not fans. So I'll repeat - where is the significant coverage of the goal beyond a match report? GiantSnowman 07:10, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@GiantSnowman: An article here only for the goal. 176.198.200.118 (talk) 21:42, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I should have said an independent reliable source. GiantSnowman 21:43, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@GiantSnowman: When someone scores in a World Cup Final, would you read a match report about the final score or articles about each goal scored by itself? All players who scored would have a ref to the match report. Your argument regarding notability is invalid. 176.198.200.118 (talk) 22:14, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
This was not the final, though...if he'd scored in the final I would have added the info myself! GiantSnowman 08:39, 2 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Partners

[edit]

"Mahrez married his English girlfriend Rita in 2015. Their daughter was born later that year. In June 2019, the couple, who by that time had two daughters, were ordered to pay a former nanny more than £3,600 in unpaid wages. In October 2020, it was confirmed that Mahrez is now in a relationship with model Taylor Ward after splitting from Johal." Unclear who "Johal" is - is she the same person as Rita? Or did he split from Rita, have a relationship with someone called Johal, then move on to Taylor Ward.....? -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 14:37, 31 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Rita is Johal - see this edit which confused matters... GiantSnowman 18:52, 31 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Transfer to Saudi Arabia

[edit]

It was reported that his move to Al-Ahli was confirmed on 20 July 2023, for a fee of 30 million pound according to these links [2] [3] [4] JC Kotisow (talk) 01:51, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

They all state that he is set to join, not joined. Meaning it hasn't been officially confirmed yet. Footballgy (talk) 13:55, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Agree - nothing official yet. GiantSnowman 17:59, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Place of birth

[edit]

Far many sources say Sarcelles than Clichy - see L'Equipe, Soccerway, BBC etc. GiantSnowman 21:48, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

These source are not reliable. The only reliable source is the LFP. In addition, I obtained a copy of his birth certificate from the commune of Clichy, and this confirms that he was indeed born there.
Please admit you were wrong and move on, thank you. Nathan2718 (talk) 21:56, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Nathan2718: No, they aren't. Please stop your WP:VAND, since several articles actually say that he was born in Sarcelles: Merip, Sky Sports and so on. If you do have a birth certificate of him, this would qualify as WP:OR and is against the rules, aside from not being a WP:RS.
Please provide proper reliable sources before editing. BRDude70 (talk) 21:59, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You cannot use birth certificates, see WP:BLPPRIMARY. We rely on sources - e.g. this and this and this and this etc. GiantSnowman 22:00, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I do not need to use his birth certificate, the LFP source is sufficient, and that of Globalsportsdata confirms. Nathan2718 (talk) 22:02, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As has been explained to you - one source does not matter, when so many other sources contradict it. GiantSnowman 22:10, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Nathan2718: I agree with @GiantSnowman here, as your WP:IKNOWBEST approach seems far from polite... BRDude70 (talk) 22:11, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, excuse me for being right, haha. Nathan2718 (talk) 22:13, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you're so right, you didn't need to reply like this. Plus, when three editors disagree from your edits and none agree, I wouldn't say that you're right TBH... :) BRDude70 (talk) 22:16, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
TBF, there is a discrepancy in the sourcing that was worthy of discussion. The issue was the way in which Nathan went about it, edit warring to push what appears to be incorrect information, as well as having an attitude. GiantSnowman 22:24, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I reverted the French wikipedia, I rarely go on there, so hope it stays correct. Govvy (talk) 11:30, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I second everything above. The French website of Manchester City when Mahrez played there said he was born in Sarcelles, and surely they would know? [5] There's nothing that annoys me more than a "just trust me bro" attitude from people who think they have the actual answer and 99.999% of reliable sources are wrong. Unknown Temptation (talk) 14:07, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@GiantSnowman: If you're interested, that Nathan guy was also banned on the French wiki for socking, regards Govvy (talk) 23:02, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Why am I not surprised? GiantSnowman 09:18, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
