There is no link to the RN Acheron class, despite what several poor quality secondary sources say the first three ships were ordered by the Commonwealth government to a private design in Feb 1909 long before the Acheron class class was concieved. See Friedman, British Destroyers.

I entreat any naval history enthusiast to look at the design, dimensions, dates or better yet Friedman and see fir themselves.

Origin

[edit]

Iv'e been researching this class as part of writing an article for Acheron class destroyer. From what I have so far the first three ships of this class ( Yarra, Warrego, Parramatta) were laid down and completed as Acherons, transferred to the RAN and made the journey to Australia, rather than being dissasembled and re-assembled later (this seems beyond the shipbuilding capabilities of the time to me). The technical specifications available here and elsewhere agree with this, they certainly aren't River or E class ships. According to my sources three Yarrow-built specials were ordered to replace these 3 ships that were never completed for the RN. If I am right here, this article needs to be updated accordingly, linked in with the Acheron article when I complete it, and be disambigauted from the RN Rivers. This page nearly needs to be re done, by someone with at least a mild understanding of RAN history, and a few references at hand that they can cite. What is this research? Where from? I have never read that these ships were laid down as RN units in a RAN history - quite the opposit in fact. If its research, why isnt it cited? ChrisMCau (talk) 00:54, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have added some information, which I think clarifies the relationship with the Acheron class. ChrisMCau (talk) 19:29, 24 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Differences in second trio

[edit]

Note that the Australian-built ships were lengthened by 5 ft from the original (British) design used for the first three. Rif Winfield 20:15, 6 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unclear point

[edit]

I know very little about ships. I found this article through the "random article" feature. It is not clear if the purpose of these ships is to destroy torpedo boats, or if they themselves are topedo boats. Northwestgnome (talk) 16:33, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
