Huh?

[edit]

"...is the only known species of rock iguana to coexist with another cyclura species, the Rhinoceros Iguana (Cyclura cornuta)."

This makes no sense. Both the Ricord's iguana and rhinoceros iguana are a apecies of "rock iguana" (cyclura). Therefore, there have to be at least two species of cyclura that coexist with others.

That wasn't worded the best. I wanted them to use the other hook...about the goatherds.--Mike Searson 22:25, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This was brought up by me in the main page discussion. We came to the conclusion that rewording the phrase would help. I am going to reword it now to "...is the only known species of rock iguana to coexist with the Rhinoceros Iguana (Cyclura cornuta)." Alphabet55 23:16, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Every source cited makes the scientific name of this species Cyclura ricordii. Is there some reason it has been altered for this article? Richigi (talk) 00:16, 21 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 8 December 2020

[edit]
The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: No consensus so I have moved it back to where it started. Ddum5347 is hereby advised that moving this article is controversial, and should not be attempted again without consensus. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 22:28, 16 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ricord's iguanaCyclura ricordii – This is a neutral nomination to fix a malformed request. BegbertBiggs (talk) 14:05, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Summary of the situation as far as I can tell: This article was at "Cyclura ricordii" prior to August. On 10 August, Ddum5347 made a technical request to move it to "Ricord's iguana", which was carried out by Anthony Appleyard. On 12 August, the move was reverted by Kevmin. Earlier today, Ddum5347 made another technical request to move the article to "Ricord's iguana". This request was carried out by Nithin. Due to some mishap the request was not removed from WP:RM/TR, where it was subsequently contested by Kevmin. Anthony Appleyard then expanded the request to a full discussion, but the RM was inadvertently placed at Talk:Cyclura ricordii, currently a redirect. The original request is preserved below this summary. BegbertBiggs (talk) 14:06, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Cyclura ricordiiRicord's iguana – Fauna should use their common names for article titles Ddum5347 (talk) 02:01, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This is a contested technical request (permalink). Anthony Appleyard (talk) 13:08, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Controversial move, and NOT supported by naming rules or guidelines, which is to use the most commonly used, citable unambiguous name. This includes the binomial or trinomial. This user has been warned about making page moves before to made up names.--Kevmin § 04:30, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It is NOT a made-up name; this is the way the species is most commonly referred to as outside of its scientific name. Ddum5347 (talk) 16:39, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It may be the most frequently used of the vernacular names, BUT naming convention states that when multiple vernacular names exist, the binomial is to be prioritized. Additionally the naming convention at no point says that taxonomic names are to be ignored when choosing the most often used name. for this article that name is Cyclura ricordii and not any of the vernaculars.--Kevmin § 17:03, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I would like to see this naming convention for myself. Is there a written version somewhere? Ddum5347 (talk) 17:29, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think you are looking for WP:COMMONNAME and WP:NCFAUNA. Some relevant discussions are found at Talk:Daboia palaestinae and Talk:Crotalus concolor. — BarrelProof (talk) 22:19, 8 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
