Title

[edit]

The Lord of Cherbury, as in lordship of a manor, used in the article heading ought to be parenthesised as a distinction from other Richard Herberts who may have articles in their own right, but it would be incorrect to use these three words as if it was a title of same footing as a peerage. He was in the Commons but never reached the House of Lords. I will not presume to alter it myself but leave it to other editors more versed in protocol to decide.Cloptonson (talk) 21:09, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

References

[edit]

There's different info, but is this the same person as Richard Herbert (c.1557-1596)? Boleyn (talk) 07:17, 22 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

YES! The History of Parliament article used as citation opens with a description of him by Lord (Edward) Herbert, his own son.Cloptonson (talk) 06:47, 15 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Children

[edit]

Both his History of Parliament article and that of his son Edward (Lord Herbert of Cherbury) by Sidney Lee in the Dictionary of National Biography agree he had seven sons and three daughters. The names I have checked against those given in the latter article, according to which there was no Anne among the daughters, and there was also a fifth son called Charles. I am correcting the names list in this article accordingly.Cloptonson (talk) 08:47, 7 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Doubt as Sheriff of Montgomeryshire

[edit]

The Richard Herbert who was twice High Sheriff of Montgomeryshire in 1576 and 1583 is given as being of 'Park, Llanwnog'. This casts doubt on this being the Richard Herbert of our article, with his biography in the History of Parliament not mentioning his being sheriff of any county, and I am suspicious about the first period of service because it was the same year as this Richard's study at the Inns of Court in London. I will delete this mention and leave it to anyone who can demonstrate connection with the Richard Herbert of this article to reinstate it.Cloptonson (talk) 09:05, 7 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
