[edit]

I've just removed an inappropriate external link once again. Please review WP:ELNO and explain why a self-published website hosted by Geocities qualifies. We routinely remove Geocities-hosted stuff. Thanks. - Sitush (talk) 22:27, 22 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't put the link in, in the first place. It's a local history site from the place of his birth and quotes content from "Worcester Leaders: Social and Political". Please explain exactly which rule in WP:ELNO it violates. Philafrenzy (talk) 23:05, 22 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't say you did add it originally. I'm not sure that it is quoting text so much as copying large chunks of it - that's just a gut feeling, though, based on the phrasing. In any event, it is not an official village website but rather one that has been self-published by Andy Morrell, whoever he may be. Anyone could create those sites. The man didn't even bother to ascertain the authorship and date of publication of his source. If you can't see why that fails ELNO then there isn't much hope. The authority of Geocities stuff was discussed at length at WP:ELN in 2010, when the host shut down, and the opinion of respected editors such as Moonriddengirl was that there seemed scant likelihood of any being worth keeping. There seemed to be a view that if a site were official then the publisher would have moved the host to something more stable at or around that time. So find that something, please. I know DYK has somewhat low standards but this is ridiculous. - Sitush (talk) 06:13, 23 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It is a large quote from Worcestershire Leaders: Social and Political, Ernest Gaskell, Queenhithe Printing And Publishing Co., 1907. The book is available on Amazon and Abe (See http://www.abebooks.co.uk/WORCESTERSHIRE-LEADERS-Social-Political-GASKELL-Ernest/8050458201/bd). The piece contains details not in our article and which I have not seen elsewhere. The fact that the page is a former Geocities site is irrelevant. Philafrenzy (talk) 11:35, 23 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
So, assuming that the book is reliable, incorporate the info into the article and bin the link. If you haven't got the book, I'll get it. - Sitush (talk) 16:43, 26 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Arms

[edit]

Below copied from User talk:Robin S. Taylor:

Assuming it is even correct (I think arms sometimes change from one generation to the next), please would you consider an alternative format for this edit. There is no need for a separate section, the terminology is gibberish to most people, and encompassing it inside a table is poor form. Just sticking an image in there with a caption seems better (again, assuming you are using the correct armourial). - Sitush (talk) 10:49, 13 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, thinking more about this, are we even allowed to use the image? What is the situation regarding copyright and derivative works? Furthermore, what is the situation regarding original research, about which there is current a discussion here? I am going to remove your addition pending some clarification and will copy these comments over to the article talk page. - Sitush (talk) 11:03, 13 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

--end copy--

Hence my removal of the edit from the article now. - Sitush (talk) 11:09, 13 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
