"It's already in the infobox"

[edit]

Yankees10 deleted the years from the teams.

First - with zero edit summary. As WP:FIES indicates, "It is considered good practice to provide a summary for every edit, especially when reverting (undoing) the actions of other editors or deleting existing text; otherwise, people may question your motives for the edit."

Now, with a fallacious one. Arguing "it's already in the infobox."

So what?

That's not a convincing argument.

His name is already in the infobox. His teams are already in the infobox. His place of birth is already in the infobox.

Those are not reason to delete them from the article.

Remember -- the infobox serves a purpose similar to the lede, in large part, in that much of it is summary of what is in the text of the article.

And, of course, there are many articles ... and many about the most famous baseball players ever ... that reflect this. Babe Ruth, Barry Bonds, Lou Gehrig, Stan Musial, Albert Pujols, Eddie Murray, Willie Mays, Ken Griffey, Rafael Palmeiro, Dave Winfield, Manny Ramirez, Al Simmons, Reggie Jackson, Jim Thome, Sammy Sosa, Adrián Beltré ... and on and on and on ...

Thus, given that Yankees10 first failed to use any edit summary - as he should - to revert another editor (a practice I would urge him to avoid), and then because he offered an edit summary with a clearly flawed rationale, I'm reverting him here. --2604:2000:E016:A700:7943:2675:5B48:2161 (talk) 07:41, 14 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
