Wording in lead

I don’t understand what this wording in the lead means: “His obscure though close relationship with William Shakespeare has long made him interesting to scholars.” What does “obscure” relationship mean? —Kbabej (talk) 01:41, 19 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
