The origin of rfu
[edit]Hello. I was the scientist who created the term "Relative Fluorescence Unit" abbreviated as "rfu" for the first fluorescence scanner I developed in 1991. Its commercial name was the FluorImager575. At the time, there was no Google or other powerful search-engine so I assumed I was the originator of “rfu”. The scanner was to replace the camera/light box qualitative methods used in molecular biology labs. Some components of the scanner were patented. I have pictures and info of the scanner itself, my cover picture taken with the prototype of the scanner on the Biotechnique magazine, marketing brochures, technical notes and published articles with "rfu" mentioned in them. All the subsequent fluorescence scanners/detectors from that company (Molecular Dynamics, acquired by Amersham then GE) use “rfu”.
