[edit]

There are a couple of errors, or at least misleading examples, in the etymologies cited here.

Catalan sorra is not from LL sabulō sabulōnis, but from L saburra ‘ballast’.

French sable and Italian sabbia are from LL sabulum, not from LL sabulō sabulōnis.

From LL sabulō we have instead Italian sabbióne ‘gravel’, Romansh sablun ‘sand, sandbank’, Old Occitan sablọṇ ‘sand’, Old Catalan sabló ‘sand’ (> modern Catalan and Valencian sauló ‘id.’), Sp sablón, F sablon.

LL formāticus gives Old French formage, altered to modern French fromage. Italian formaggio is borrowed from Old French and does not continue the Latin etymon directly, although Catalan 'formatge may.

See http://dcvb.iec.cat/ (Catalan Dictionary); http://www.treccani.it/ (Italian dictionary); and Romance etymological dictionary of Meyer-Lübke (downloadable through Internet Archive). Rilkas (talk) 20:54, 7 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Too long

[edit]

If anyone wants to shorten this article by removing some (or several) of the entries, they have my blessing. Just leave what you judge to be the more interesting ones. The Nicodene (talk) 19:13, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
