Metro area

The Redding "metro area" says it is "Redding/Chico." Um, Chico is about a 90 minute (73 mile) drive southeast of Redding. How the heck is that in the same "metro area?" RobertM525 (talk) 07:50, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

It looks like someone was overzealous about promoting the Redding area or something like that. See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Redding-Chico Metropolitan Area for documentation on the removal of the "Redding-Chico Metropolitan Area" page. Quick summary: no such Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) or Combined Statistical Area (CSA) exists at the US Census Bureau. The two cities are separate MSAs. I removed the corresponding links and text from the Redding, California page. Ikluft (talk) 17:11, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Picture Orientation

Comparing the picture to Google maps (after showing that picture to a visiting friend who was disoriented by it) ... I see that this picture seems to be "upside down" (The northern edge of the photograph is oriented to the bottom?)

How do we fix that? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.240.40.182 (talkcontribs) 22:48, 25 March 2007

I fixed this. It was moderately messy as the image needed to be rotated 135 degrees clockwise meaning it would hang on the wall in a diamond shaped frame. After rotating I cropped it to get it to "hang straight" meaning we lost Shasta Lake. One upshot is I used the original NASA image file which is far more detailed (and larger). Culture

"Friday morning at 6:00 AM, there is a giant pancake breakfast hosted by men in oversized styrofoam cowboy hats.
Tens of thousands trek to the breakfast to satisfy their need for pancakes and syrup."

Seems unencyclopedic.

The entire section was actually unencyclopedic - it was just a list of things that happen to be in Redding. Nothing was cited, and the major stuff from the list is discussed in detail elsewhere in the article. I removed the section. Townlake (talk) 15:03, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

Population Figures

Wikipedia is the only source I've seen for population figures of over 100,000. Where is that data coming from? Creatangar (talk) 18:04, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

There have been no "recent annexations". This information seems to lack a factual basis. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.18.131.64 (talk) 04:22, 26 October 2008 (UTC)

I agree, and I've fact-tagged that claim accordingly. Townlake (talk) 15:38, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry

This organization is not mentioned in the article. Should it go in the "Education" section? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.177.98.225 (talk) 17:39, 21 August 2012 (UTC)

US Invasion Force??

This page has had references to the "US invasion force", "non-native Invaders" and "civilizing" for a few months now. Should I just consider it not credible? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.162.135.24 (talk) 17:50, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

Sundial Bridge accuracy

Saying the sundial is only accurate one day a year is misleading. The Sundial Bridge at Turtle Bay article makes clear that the shadow is exactly accurate only once a year. All simple sundials such as this suffer the same problem (see Equation of time) and in this context it does not seem notable. VIA Magazine quoted Wikipedia on this (without attribution), causing more confusion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 38.99.34.6 (talk) 03:41, 24 January 2014 (UTC)

Picture Selection

The picture of the hot-rod under the transportation section seems a bit random. Maybe somebody just wanted to show off their wheels? I don't see how that photo relates to Redding really. It is at a 'car show in Redding' apparently, but somehow it seems benign to me. Honupea (talk) 15:19, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

I surmise by the caption "at a Redding car show" the picture comes from a tourist or recent retiree happy they are not in LA. I would deduce that this is a picture from the locally famous "Hot August Nights" car show, adapted from a similar show of the same name that takes place in Reno, NV. Presidentbalut (talk) 17:23, 25 November 2013 (UTC)
The picture most likely is from Kool April Nites. Redding's Kool April Nites is held on the last weekend in April. The name was inspired by Reno's Hot August Nights. It started small, with mostly local participants, but has steadily grown to be among the most popular West Coast events. April 2014 marks the 25th anniversary for the event. It definitely relates to Redding, as it is one our largest tourism draws. RealityzOver8ed (talk) 22:29, 12 February 2014 (UTC)

Sundial Bridge as the Main Picture-Appropriateness?

Who selected the Sundial Bridge as the main picture for the Redding article? It is not visible from within the city limits. It is nowhere near downtown. It is on a bike path out of the city. On top of that, it was built by rich retirees from LA. Most of the locals abhor the image of this bridge. Would an actual picture of Redding be more appropriate? Presidentbalut (talk) 17:34, 25 November 2013 (UTC)

The Sundial Bridge is visible from within city limits, as the city limit extends far beyond the downtown area. It is especially visible coming into downtown Redding from Interstate 5 and SR 44. It is within 1 mile to drive from the bridge to the center of downtown (using Market Street Promenade as the 'center'), even closer 'as the crow flies'. Much of the funding for the bridge was provided by The McConnell Foundation, with the remainder of funding coming from the City of Redding. The McConnell Foundation is based in Redding and was founded by longtime residents Carl and Leah McConnell. Please see the Foundation history at http://www.mcconnellfoundation.org/about/history. During its conception and construction there was much discussion as to the appropriateness of such a structure in Redding. There were many voices for and against. At this time much of Redding has embraced the Sundial Bridge to the point that its image is used in marketing media for many businesses. The bridge is also a large tourism draw, making it an important part of the local economy. RealityzOver8ed (talk) 22:55, 12 February 2014 (UTC)
