Confusion!
[edit]Is the country of New Zealand (North and South Islands) or the Realm of New Zealand the sovereign state? Is it similar to the Netherlands, which includes countries, or more similar to the United States, which includes dependent territories? In other words, are the North and South Islands (the country of New Zealand) dependent on the Realm, or are the Ross Dependency and Tokelau dependent on New Zealand (North and South Islands)?
Ross Dependency is claim only
[edit]The Ross Dependency is claimed by New Zealand, a claim accepted only by the other six countries with territorial claims in Antarctica. It is not recognized by the international community as belonging to New Zealand. This article neglects this important context. The word "claimed" should be added where necessary. 65.92.140.248 (talk) 11:41, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
Which central government functions are in the respective units? How are the countries as a whole divided up?
There are different degrees of sovereignty, see the list below. It is also unclear what exists at each level apart from the units mentioned, e.g. the French territories that never were members of the EU. Wallis and Futuna in Overseas France has, among other things, traditional law and monarchs. What makes comparisons more difficult is that the United Kingdom is not a federal state. Apparently, France is divided into a central state and several, not all, parts of non-European France, given the existence of partially sovereign parts. France is the all-encompassing concentric circle. The United Kingdom possibly is the smallest of the concentric circles, with even the Channel Islands being outside the UK. I have used the model (i.e. incorrect) of concentric circles. If there are 5 concentric ones, we have 8 different interior surfaces.
I have made up the following list of elements of subnational states:
executive
Judiciary
legislative
Schengen
EU
De facto situation

- It is difficult to understand what point you are trying to make. Could you try again and keep it short and simple. Roger 8 Roger (talk) 09:07, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
- I would like to know, which the respective echelons in each counttry are, for example what is on the same echelon in other countries like the United Kingdom (i. e. Great Britain +Northern Ireland). I don't know the name of the entire sovereign nation, another entire sovereign nation being Realm of New Zealand. Sarcelles (talk) 18:16, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
- It looks as though you are simply putting together some original research about the comparative geographical structure of various states. While I understand that the Realm of New Zealand is one of the cases you are interested in, I don't see any other way that the questions you raise relate to this Talk page - they certainly don't seem relevant to discerning content for this article. "Realm of New Zealand" in Māori
[edit]I will write an article in my language's Wikipedia on this subject and would like to know how you would say "Realm of New Zealand" in the Māori language, I have searched but haven't found anything. And maybe it could be integrated in this article too. Thank you! Adriendelucca (talk) 00:55, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
- What is your language, you seem pretty competent with English. Why would we want to integrate a foreign language translation of the title into this article anyway? This is the English Wikipedia. Roger 8 Roger (talk) 01:45, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
- Breton is my language, I suggested it could be added to this article as Māori is a language of New Zealand and I've seen many articles including the Māori name of the article but I'm not familiar with the English Wikipedia and it's rules so I won't make any changes myself of course Adriendelucca (talk) 13:11, 15 April 2024 (UTC)
- I just did a quick search and I also couldn't find anything, sorry. Possibly it would be something like "Rangatiratanga o Aotearoa" or "Kīngitanga o Aotearoa", but I can't be sure.
- The topic of the Realm of New Zealand is really quite niche (and not really a proper "thing", more just a term for the collection of nations/territories that have the "King/Queen in right of New Zealand" as their head of state), so it's possible that there is no definitive term for it in Māori as yet. 161.29.216.215 (talk) 11:11, 15 April 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you, I'll probably refrain from including the Māori name if there are no official translations. Adriendelucca (talk) 13:16, 15 April 2024 (UTC)
- There is no reason to add the Maori name anywhere. This is the English Wikipedia so we use English. The reason for adding a foreign language translation of a title in the lead sentence is if it is used by a significant number English language of RSSs, in so doing making it an alternative name used in English. That isn't the case here. Just because a language has a loose connection with the title isn't a reason to add that language's name. This is misunderstood by many editors which has lead to a smothering of inappropriate foreign language names in many articles. Roger 8 Roger (talk) 19:54, 15 April 2024 (UTC)
