Etymology cancer

The etymology section is enormous and excessively dominant. It contains 2,836 words, equivalent to six pages of a Word document. I like words and etymology, but I quailed on seeing this and didn't even read it. Does anyone with the guts to read it think it needs to be corralled off into its own separate article? — O'Dea (talk) 10:33, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

I agree -- I came to this article specifially to find out about the etymology, and found it fascinating, but it doesn't feel like this article is the right place for so much specific information, especially since it seems to apply equally to real property, not just real estate. I would personally love to see a "real (etymology)" article, but is Wikipedia the right place for lengthy articles on etymology? Or Wiktionary? Mjbaldwin (talk) 05:18, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

Longest Etymology i've ever seen. Havent read it but usually its just like "The Oxford English Dictionary notes its first use in 1262" or something for a few sentences. So I would assume most of this stuff can be put into a History section. So Etymology for the history of the actual word, and a History section for everything else. Can some stuff be trimmed? example: Philippines

There's a section "Philippines" which just says:

In the Philippines, one of the growing business in the country is real estate development. Aside from the development and rising of tall buildings and establishment in the metropolitan area, nearby provinces are now on the stage of land development with its continuous expansion in the nearby provinces such as Laguna, Cavite, Rizal, Bulacan, Pampanga and Batangas.

Uh, is this sort of commentary really fit for Wikipedia? When someone consults an encyclopaedia to learn about real estate, should they be presented text about in which Philippine cities business is booming right now?

(If yes, then I presume we should also have similar sections about all other countries which currently have cities with a booming property market, right?)

I was going to just delete it, but maybe the article contains a load of other stuff that should just be deleted, so I thought I'd leave a note here and hope that someone with more of an interest in this topic takes a look. Gronky (talk) 11:40, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
