It is puppet show, particularly Petrushka show, that involved specific manner of speech and articulation mentioned in the article, as well as the use of tonic verses (rayoshnik) rather than sillabic or sillabo-tonic ones, which prevailed in Russian poetry. The same has the implications of "low entertainment", though it is not necessarily an obscene one. Probably, Shoshakovich had in mind the associations with the tastes of theatrical gallery gods as well, but it is obviously not more than association. It seems to me that any references to talk show made in the article are out of point.
