[edit]lol thanks for all the quotes Ray Hudson is the man, you don't know what commentating is until you have heard him.
If there's any justice Ray Hudson should rank as one of the best commentators in the history of tv sports - any sports. One of the amazing things though is that he has been partnered with Phil Schoen, who must be one of the best play-by-play announcers you could name in the history of soccer tv coverage, not just in the USA, but in any English-speaking country. For want of a better analogy, they seem to have a straight-man/funny-man chemistry, with Schoen delivering "just the facts, ma'am" for each 90 minutes, yet with a prodigious knowledge of soccer at club and international level, whilst Hudson bends - and sometimes breaks - the English language to amplify the drama played out on the pitch, often drawing on his first-hand knowledge of playing and management.
Ray's failing as a commentator is that he often over-dramatizes the ordinary, seemingly just for the sake of raising his own heart-rate. But on the flip-side no commentator (that I know of in my lifetime) has his ability to capture the true flavor and drama of genuine classic matches and raise the standard of commentary befitting of the level of play on the field. The 2006-2007 season La Liga "Classico" between Madrid and Barcelona, covered by Ray and Phil on GolTV being just one example of how commentary can - if you're lucky as a viewer - perfectly complement a match played at the highest level - and for the highest stakes in the modern game. (Hopefully that particular match will survive in reruns for many years to come, for the artistry of the commentary almost as much as for the magnificent game it was.)
If I can contribute more "Rayisms" to the main article I will, but whoever compiled it so far did a great job. I hope more get added as Ray's commentating career progresses.
If the buffoons who cover the EPL on British television had any sense they'd hire Ray in a heartbeat and pay him far more than, for example the unintelligible Andy Gray on Sky. (On Fox Soccer Channel in the States.)
Perhaps also Ray will eventually get more than just this Wiki entry and have devoted fan pages - just like the inimitable Murray Walker who had a similar ability to dramatize but whose "creativity" with the English language while commentating was perhaps a tad more wayward...

I mean, he's a good commentator, but he does say some dumb stuff. "He has the biomechanics of a peregrine falcon!" Come on. Also as a D.C. United fan, I can never forgive him for helping drive the team into the ground. Titmanisdaman 02:20 17 January 2008 (UTC)
Can someone add some career stats for Ray? From Newcastle and Ft.Lauderdale. Was he a good or great player? Thanks!
Okay, here are some stats for you. He played for Minnesota Strikers of MISL from 1984-87 playing in 89 games and scoring 30 goals and had 33 assists. Libro0 (talk) 23:19, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit]Should the quotes section be moved to Wikiquote rather than making this page gratuitously long as well as pretty much entirely unsourced? Isaiah (talk) 19:12, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
