Rower?

[edit]

@Schwede66, Lugnuts, David Biddulph, and Materialscientist: Do we have any evidence that Raoul Paoli (Olympic athletics competitor and wrestler) and Paoli (Olympic rower) at Sports-Reference are identical, as claimed by this article? It appears very unlikely to me, to be honest. SR claims that the rower was affiliated with a club located somewhat close to Bordeaux, while Raoul Paoli was living near or in Paris. —MisterSynergy (talk) 15:41, 20 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The short answer is that I don't know. But maybe @Canadian Paul: can help? Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 16:34, 20 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
FISA & the IOC give Raoul as the forename of the coxswain: Raoul Paoli at World Rowing, and certainly there are reports of some of the coxswains being young boys, so it is not impossible. The IOC have different entries for https://www.olympic.org/raoul-lucien-paoli and https://www.olympic.org/raoul-paoli, but no valid date of birth for the latter. Evidence seems scant either way. --David Biddulph (talk) 16:56, 20 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The database behind Sports Reference, and now the IOC, has the following note on the rower: "Some sources list this athlete as the same person as [...] Raoul Paoli, but we consider this unlikely, given the age, weight and origin of the two Paolis." Considering that the fact that these two are the same person is cited to SR, it should probably be removed, since SR does not make that claim. Canadian Paul 20:02, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
