Cirque Du Soleil
[edit]Cirque du Soleil Kooza is coming to Randall's Island this summer. It should be mentioned in the article. KannD86 (talk) 22:57, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

Randalls
[edit]Although an apostrophe is often used in Randall's, it's not an official part of the name. The definitive authority calls it Randalls. This makes sense, because possessives were universally removed from place names in the late 19th century, and only a few places got them back (see Martha's Vineyard#Exploration) What makes this frustrating is that the park conservancy on the island uses the possessive, perhaps influencing sources like Seitz (the Other Islands of New York City). Although it's unusual to alter the name of an organization, it's more painful to give variations on a name. The New York Times removes the apostrophe when discussing the group (ref), and I've done the same here for simplicity and uniformity. Fitnr (talk) 22:25, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
- I'm going to edit the article to at least mention that the island is also called Randall's. While the federal government has indeed largely banished apostrophes, I'd take issue with the claim that the federal government is the definite authority for a non-federal place's name. The city government, which would probably be the best source for such matters, refers to the island as Randall's more often than not. See, for example, Randall's Island Park. - Thanks for the ping. I skimmed this thread beforehand but I missed the last sentence about removing the apostrophe even from proper names that officially include it. South Bronx Greenway renders "Randall's Island Connector" as "Randalls Island connector" (i.e., not as a proper name) and I think that would be acceptable for this article as well. I'm weakly opposed to changing "Randall's Island Park Alliance" just because it is the official name of an organization and my reading of WP:TITLE is that WP:CONSISTENT only comes into play when there is no WP:COMMONNAME. As I noted in my edit summary I have no appetite to wade into an argument about "Randalls" versus "Randall's"; I just want the article text to be consistent. Rublov (talk) 23:19, 14 May 2021 (UTC)
- Rublov, Hmmm, I wrote most of South Bronx Greenway. I'd say it's purely an oversight on my part to have written "Randalls Island connector" with a lower-case c. The NY Times article I cited consistently writes "Randalls Island Connector", and only uses lower-case when used in a generic sense, i.e. "the Bronx entrance to the connector remains blocked off". So, I'm going to fix that now. I see we say, "In November 2015, a ground-level footbridge over the Bronx Kill, called the Randall's Island Connector", which i'm going to fix as well.
- As for "Randall's Island Park Alliance". That's what they call themselves, so that's what we should call them. If they want to misspell it, that's on them. -- RoySmith (talk) 00:06, 15 May 2021 (UTC)
- Okay, that sounds good to me. Rublov (talk) 01:21, 15 May 2021 (UTC)

Blacklisted Links Found on the Main Page
[edit]Cyberbot II has detected that page contains external links that have either been globally or locally blacklisted. Links tend to be blacklisted because they have a history of being spammed, or are highly innappropriate for Wikipedia. This, however, doesn't necessarily mean it's spam, or not a good link. If the link is a good link, you may wish to request whitelisting by going to the request page for whitelisting. If you feel the link being caught by the blacklist is a false positive, or no longer needed on the blacklist, you may request the regex be removed or altered at the blacklist request page. If the link is blacklisted globally and you feel the above applies you may request to whitelist it using the before mentioned request page, or request its removal, or alteration, at the request page on meta. When requesting whitelisting, be sure to supply the link to be whitelisted and wrap the link in nowiki tags. The whitelisting process can take its time so once a request has been filled out, you may set the invisible parameter on the tag to true. Please be aware that the bot will replace removed tags, and will remove misplaced tags regularly.
