Date of Formation

[edit]

In Jharkhand article the date of formation of State of Jharkhand is mentioned as 15 November 2000. Here the date given is 1999. Which is correct?

Contents

[edit]

The present contents of the page are acquiring the characteristics of a yellow pages instead of an encyclopedia article. As such, I think reorganization of contents and removing unnecessary information shall be in order. Actually it should conriem to guidelines as per Wikipedia:Wikiproject Indian cities. I will try to give the artcile a new look. Further comments are invited. --Bhadani 13:38, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I shall move yellow pages type info to a sub-page or something like that - the time has come for each one interested in the article to make this a really encycopedic article. By the way, I belong to Ranchi, although I have lived in 9 states of India. --Bhadani 17:06, 16 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I repeat my above suggestion. --Bhadani 14:52, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed a good idea! Go ahead.VMO 15:03, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

-- I don't know for whatever reason or interest people are adding names of hotel and restaurants and mentioning the names of proprietors too ... This isn't a Yellow pages classifieds thing. We need to make this article more standard and at par. Afterall this too would give impression to outsiders about the kind we are... discussion about lists and linking

[edit]

I am compiling all the related discussions on this talk page about posting lists in the article. It seems that this has been a problem since 2007, and I am making major changes to the article since it seems nothing much has been done since then. I would like to emphasize a comment that has already been made:

Stick it to the article for now, no new article needed there. Rule of thumb: if they have a Wikipedia article, include them. If they don't, don't - create the article first, add them later. Jobjörn (Talk ° contribs) 13:39, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is not a directory. It is not appropriate to have lists of things in this article that have some connection to Ranchi, and the items in the list should not appear in any form if those things are not intimately associated with the character of the city itself. tere baap la bhosda!

I am massively rearranging the article, including searching for links for things in lists, integrating things into a non-list format, and deleting information that cannot readily be linked to sources either in some other wikipedia article or Google. I am sure I will make mistakes and I encourage anyone who identifies any change that needs to be made to be bold and make it. --Bluerasberry (talk) 18:15, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please listen to me. Please assist in developing the contents on the line as suggested in {{Wikiproject Indian cities}}. Ranchi is my home town, and we all from that city, as also other editors interested in the article should develop the contents in a suitable manner. Currently, it has become like a useless yellow pages. Please help. Thank you. --Bhadani 13:26, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would request the editors to please refrain from adding commercial links. That would be treated as vandalizm, and accordingly dealt with. --Bhadani 14:32, 14 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This page is a really very bad example of our pages: in the zeal to add contents, some of us do not even care to read anything about wikipedia, and click and save for self-satisfaction, a self-befooling process indeed. I shall re-write the page completely someday. Edidtors interested to add contents are requiested to read at least some good pages like Mumbai, Ahmedabad, etc. and try to understand the way a page is required to develop. --Bhadani 23:36, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Lists of schools and colleges removed.spacejuncky 07:04, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree with removal of list of schools and will revert it back if no one else points out a disapproval. Mayank Abhishek 10:42, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not remove the comment Having a list of schools and colleges is acceptable, but then create a seperate wiki pages for that, don't add in main article, it does't make a pleasent reading. Look at article like Mumbai, Delhi etc they are featured articles and do not contain any such indescriminate listings. I agree that many articles have such listings, but then you and me can help improving them by cleaning them. If you think some school or college is important and should be mentioned than present it in details, not in form of bulleted text or list.
Removing listing incase you have reverted it.
Cheers!

Please don't modify other people's comments. Mayank Abhishek 12:24, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No, i'd better bring Administrator in, they might be able to convince you. spacejuncky 12:26, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your discussion above is rather confusing. In any case, huge lists like those now in Schools of Ranchi and Colleges of Ranchi are not good to have in articles, it's better to split them off. However, the lists contain very detailed information - are we sure we really need to include all those schools? Could someone who knows them cut out those which are very notable or have a large amount of students?

It is also very important that sources are cited. Read WP:V and WP:CITE. Therefore, you should add one or more references to verify the stated fact that all these schools actually do exist.

Furthermore, perhaps Schools of Ranchi and Colleges of Ranchi could be merged into a single article covering a slightly broader topic, Education in Ranchi?

I'm awaiting your replies. Jobjörn (Talk ° contribs) 12:48, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am from Ranchi, and I agree that lists can be split, as I have done. I am not sure about one or two schools, but most of them 95% do exist, I will try to cite reference. Mayank Abhishek 13:06, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Could you also merge them into Education in Ranchi instead of having two separate articles? Jobjörn (Talk ° contribs) 13:15, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I feel that the lists will soon grow with more information coming in, but for the mean time they can be merged. I will not be able to contribute much for coming 2 months, because of my exams. But, I will try to improve the lists later. You can merge them till then.

Mayank Abhishek 05:35, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well Mayank will kill me for this :) but I feel list of well known people is also increasing. People listed may not be that worth mentioning (except someone like Dhoni or Albert Ekka). Others I guess are politician, as ranchi is capital city of Jharkhand it is obivious that these politicians will have there stay here. Also it will be good if we have a seperate page like People of Ranchi or whatever. Even in case of people that are mentioned (Dhoni or Albert), do give brief intro and link to their respective article, don't just list it.

spacejuncky 08:14, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think Mayur will be a better person to edit these, for me many people in Ranchi are popular, but those who deserve mention are those who are known at least at other places in India. Mayur edit as you want, no probs. Mayank Abhishek 12:32, 10 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Linked the present list of people to their pages. Mayank Abhishek 09:00, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
A name Amit Srivatsav keeps reappearing, from the ip User:59.145.105.21, as far as I know, even after living in Ranchi for 18 years, I do not know a notable person of the name!

I think list of known people should be removed altogether. Mayank Abhishek 11:25, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. Jobjörn (Talk ° contribs) 12:07, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Assessment comment

[edit]

The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:Ranchi/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.

check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delhi and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kochi%2C_India for some ideas of content and headings that are missing. Check WP:WIAGA and WP:WIAFA carefully also. Further, climate should be a subheading under geography and more references need to be given for this section, and the 'people' section under demographics. A LOT more in-text references are needed throughout the rest of the article. Still a fair way to go before you can think of raising the grade of this article, but a promising effort. Language and people

[edit]

In the page it is mentioned that people speak kortha and kurmali, which is completely wrong as kortha is a language spoken mainly in north chotanagpur area as well as kurmali is a language spoken specially only by the kurmali tribe who's residence are hazaribagh and ramgarh district. The city is located in kurukh/ tribe area, i.e most of the surrounding villages in all direction is inhabitated by oraon people with small population of sadan and other tribe, the language of oraon is kurukh but most of them are unable to speak and prefere to speak nagpuri/ sadri all other language other than hindi and nagpuri are minority language so need not to be mentioned. The name of the city is derived from the oraon word archi, the structure of the city area is trible, like many area name ends with toli. In current senario most the urban population of the city are migrant from bihar, bengal,Up, and other part of the state as well as country. Ashok kr oraon (talk) 05:36, 5 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
