Isn't "rain check" (as the promise to provide an item by a merchant) spelled "rein check"?

question about the origin of the use of the phrase "rain check"
[edit]Question: Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't this phrase coined for use in refunding/renewing-for-a-later-game tickets at American baseball games in case there was rain, and thus the game had to be canceled? That's at least the way I've always invisioned it, but if I'm wrong please respond with appropriate citations if possible.
