Rachel Crothers’ birth year

[edit]

We recently changed Rachel Crothers’ birth year in this article from 1878 to 1870, and here’s why.

The 1878 birth year was used routinely during Crothers’ later life in published reports of her age, and it is the year given in her obituary in 1958. It is also the year given in the only full-length biography of Crothers, written by Lois Gottlieb in 1979. Not surprisingly, when placed alongside other milestones from Crothers’ early life, the difference of eight years leads to some fantastic conclusions. The most notable of these is that she graduated from high school (or college) at the age of thirteen. This must have raised the eyebrows of any historian writing about Crothers’ early career, and I have to believe it prompted some investigation. But none of the writers seems to have found evidence to overturn the 1878 birth year, and so the claim of Crothers’ precocious academic career has been repeated to the present day — even in this article, until the recent changes.

Crothers’ correct date of birth, December 12, 1870, is now easy to verify. Anyone with a free login at FamilySearch.org can view a passport application submitted by Crothers under oath in 1922, a ship manifest (1922), another ship manifest (1930), and another ship manifest (1933). Important corroborating evidence can be found in the 1880 federal census (compiled in June 1880), where she is listed as the 9-year-old daughter of Eli and Maria Crothers.

A few online sources already use the 1870 birth year. These include the archives of Illinois State University, where Crothers’ papers are stored, and the McLean County History Museum in her hometown of Bloomington, Illinois.
