Fresh discussion re POV
I just made several edits[1] to remove the recent POV and peacock templates. I also restored one referenced bit of info and remove a citation-needed template stuck in the middle of a sentence with a ref already at the end. The POV template referred readers to discussion here, but there has been no discussion on this page since 2010, and that was related to a WP:FRINGE edit. I think that all of the templates were inappropriate for this Featured Article, but we can discuss it here if anybody wishes to.--Hjal (talk) 06:36, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
Reputation as a conservationist
The Fish & Wildlife Service apparently considered her as having contributed to the cause of Conservation. [[2]] But the body of the article does not describe anything she did or wrote that led to conserving anything. This is a serious omission.
I deleted a few mentions of her as a conservationist, not because I think she wasn't one, but merely because the article didn't say what she did - or even who said she was one. This is easily remedied, but right now I'm concerned with the DDT ban, so I'll leave that for others, okay? --Uncle Ed (talk) 17:32, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
- Not sure what you are looking for...the article plainly cites and provides .pdfs of numerous writings on conservation.I believe most renowned conservationist are know for trying to prevent the destruction of natural habitat, are you under the impression that Rachel Carson was somehow not trying to prevent the destruction of natural habitat?Cronos1 (talk) 02:03, 10 May 2012 (UTC)
- I already answered that question: "I deleted a few mentions of her as a conservationist, not because I think she wasn't one, but merely because the article didn't say what she did ..." Didn't you read the middle paragraph above?
- Please don't make personal remarks, and please correct the problems I mentioned instead of reverting. --Uncle Ed (talk) 04:08, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
- Ed, no one made any personal remarks. I expressed my confusion as to what you could possibly be looking for as the cited article identifies her as a conservationist and provides examples of her writings on the subject. I allowed you an ample opportunity to dialogue about it, before I reverted. Your statement that she probably was a conservationist, but your claim that the cited article "didn't tell what she did" is not adequate to delete the term. Frankly, with a reputable source, the burden is on you to demonstrate a reasonable how/why. If you haven't already done so, I recommend consulting the dictionary for the term as you seem to be giving the term an uneccessarily narrow reading. Best WishesCronos1 (talk) 01:10, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
I think that the only serious problem with the article before the current set of deletions and reverts relate to the addition of the "Rachel Carson's Significance to the Science World" section last December[3] by an editor who has made no other edits at WP. This is the section currently renamed "Science, nature, DDT, and food production" by Ed.[4] This section is not up to the standard of the rest of the article and seems to have problems. For example, it has contained this sentence from the beginning: "Rachel Carson believed the modern environmental movement of the time overused pesticides." It has problems related to original research and synthesis. It is not clear if the long quotes are Carson's or editorial content of the reverenced books. I think that it might be best to delete the entire section.
- Excellent point, I agree. The whole section could be deleted.Cronos1 (talk) 01:24, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
With regard to the current discussion, this language in the lead--"Although Silent Spring met with fierce denial by chemical companies"-- is fully supported by three heavily referenced paragraphs (3, 4 & 7) in the "Promotion and reception" section.[5] I am going to replace it with a slightly different version: "Although Silent Spring met with fierce opposition by chemical companies". As for "conservationist," the lead certainly needs something more than "Carson was an American marine biologist," although moving Silent Spring up in the lead was an improvement.--Hjal (talk) 22:19, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
- I think we can agree that Carson's work on conservation issues prior to Silent Spring, aside from her "Conservation in Action" series through the section entitled "The Edge of the Sea and transition to conservation work" was an important precursor to Silent Spring.Cronos1 (talk) 03:15, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
Ecologist or marine biologist?
I always thought of Rachel Carson as an ecologist until I came here. She may have worked as a marine biologist, she had a degree in zoology, but the Rachel Carson Institute calls her an ecologist and I will have to check, because I believe that is how she referred to her occupation/passion in life. She's been referenced as such in many other books, journals, and magazine articles (e.g., [6], here, and here).Thompsma (talk) 01:23, 5 August 2012 (UTC)
Full text of "Use of Pesticides," the 1963 Report of the President's Science Advisory Committee
For too long unavailable in most libraries, nor from the GPO, the full text of the "Use of Pesticides," the Report of the President's Science Advisory Committee is now available on line, at a blog: http://timpanogos.wordpress.com/2012/12/10/use-of-pesticides-report-of-the-presidents-science-advisory-committee-may-15-1963/
I'll leave it to editors to determine whether and where a link to it might be inserted with this warning: That's my blog.
Another version of the entire report, in .pdf, is available at the online site of the JFK Library and Museum; it is an image .pdf, and therefor may be less useful to some who wish to quote it: http://www.jfklibrary.org/Asset-Viewer/Archives/JFKPOF-087-003.aspx

- Both links were to dead archives. Removed the dead archive link, leaving the previous link intact – it's from a newspaper, so should be verifiable in hard copy. Added a link to another obituary. Replaced link to NC estuary reserve. No archive for NC estuary reserve since robots.txt prevents it. Mojoworker (talk) 19:56, 29 August 2015 (UTC)
