Disambiguation?
[edit]Should this page even exist? Are users looking for a stub (with no sources) about a Belgian factory that has not used the title of RIT since 1968, or a large university named RIT? Ahoag 08:29, 24 December 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for this remark, I have expanded this disambiguation page to be more helpful. Pvosta 17:55, 25 December 2006 (UTC)
- Still, I have to agree with Ahoag. This should be redirected to Rochester Institute of Technology. Dan Leveille 07:13, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
- Hmmm, let me guess, you are both students or ex-students of the Rochester Institute of Technology in the USA? Pvosta 18:30, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
- Seconding the fact that this should redirect to the Rochester Institute of Technology. The Belgian factory hasn't used the title since 1968, whereas the Rochester Institute of Technology is still very much called RIT. MorgothsBalrog 22:38, 26 December 2006 (UTC)MorgothsBalrog
- DO IT! -stunt
- Changing the RIT disambiguation page into a redirect page to Rochester Institute of Technology is a violation of the neutral point of view (NPOV) of Wikipedia. Pvosta 11:15, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
- I cannot seem to find the RIT acronyms recently added to the disambiguation page anywhere in the linked pages. It seems to me that these were added in an attempt to provide an argument for keeping this disambiguation page. However, these terms have little meaning if there is no related content in the articles linked.
The Wikipedia:Disambiguation guideline clearly states that the term should only be included if it is described on the target article. Wikipedia:Disambiguation#Disambiguation_pagesRadiological Imaging Technology is not described anywhere in the Radiology article. There is, however, a legitimate company with the same name, but no Wikipedia article.
The Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology is not described anywhere in the Rajiv Gandhi article. (The first paragraph at the institutes's website http://www.rgitm.org/ suggests that the school's acronym is actually RGIT.)
Robot Intelligence Technology is not described anywhere in the Robot article. (Perhaps it was mistaken for Artificial Intelligence?)
Research in Information Technology is not described anywhere in the Carnegie Mellon article. As research schools have many research projects, most are not described on Wikipedia. Were these just search engine results for the acronym RIT?
Should these additions be considered Wikipedia:Vandalism?Pvosta,
I do not see how arguing for or against a disambiguation page has anything to do with Wikipedia:NPOV?
This is a disambiguation issue. Check out the Wikipedia:Disambiguation#Primary_topic section of the Wikipedia:Disambiguation guideline.
It looks as though RIT should redirect to Rochester Institute of Technology with a top link for disambiguation as it was in previous revisions. Ahoag 01:04, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

- I agree with Ahoag, most of the entries there are either false, non-related to the link made and just purely excuses made to make Pvosta right. RIT is a big school in the US, and it is important to us. micr0nTor 01:06, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
- To be honest, "Rapid Intervention Team" is a very valuable and important disambiguation of the term "RIT", though I do not see validity in any of the other ones. My opinion of the solution to this would be to direct "RIT" to either "Rochester Institute of Technology" or "Rapid Intervention Team" with a link to the other at the top (as previously). At the very least, these two (most important) terms should be moved to the top of the disambiguation page.
- That's the way it was until Nov. 16. RIT redirected to Rochester Institute of Technology, which had a hatnote explaining that people looking for "Rapid Intervention Team" should look under Firefighter Assist and Search Team. Every other item on this page aside from those two are clear violations of WP:Disambiguation. Most of them pipe link to an article that doesn't even mention the linked term, and some of them aren't even links at all. Because this is so obvious, I'm going to be bold, move this page to RIT (disambiguation) (cleaning it up to conform with WP:MOSDAB), and restore the redirect and hatnote. This is not a violation of WP:NPOV, it's bringing the page in line with our disambiguation guidelines. Powers T 01:34, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
- I will admit that I am a student of RIT, so this is an issue that's a bit close to home for me. I would simply like to see a simplification of this, and not a disambiguation page with many irrelevant links when users are searching for RIT. Marigold 01:23, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
