Freedom Towns
[edit]What is a "freedom town"? What is the significance of this list? "Fylde" is not a town, anyway. --Dr Greg 17:19, 18 April 2007 (UTC)
- Can anyone answer this? --Dr Greg (talk) 17:09, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
A "Freedom town" means that a military unit can march through the town with "Bayonets fixed, flags flying, and drums beating." It is an honour granted by a town to a military unit that has close links - barracks, recruitment etc with the the town. Yes Fylde is not a town, but it is a "Borough" under local government of England which whilst the Fylde is mainly rural, it does have similar status to a town.
Incidentally the name Fylde is from the Danes (which is why many of the smaller towns end in "Ham"), who at one time occupied and settled in the Fylde. It actually means "The land that fills up." Which the Fylde was in the past renowned for flooding. If ever it did flood very few places would be above the floods - Kirkham being one. Having lived for many years in Treales I did a lot of research into the area which was and I still consider home - I still have relatives who live on various parts of the Fylde. The Geologist (talk) 16:42, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply after all these years! Could a brief explanation be added to the article? -- Dr Greg talk 18:27, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
Section Iraqi Abuse
[edit]Might I suggest that this section be removed completely since, as stated, the accusations were fully refuted and the photographs proven to be staged. The contents therefore have no basis in fact. Further, the comment about the soldier who was found guilty does not make clear whether he/she was a member of the Lancashire Regiment or not. I wonder about objectivity and relevance, and whether this section does not contravene Wikipedia rules on 'hoaxing'. This is my first talk, I trust I have stayed within guidelines. 10:33 9/8/09 JackCnz (talk) 21:36, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
I agree as a Lancastrian, and if I recall correctly the offending soldier was from another regiment attached to the QLR.The Geologist (talk) 16:44, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
