re-reference
[edit]Hi. I have added a citation to a reference that already existed in the text (now it is Ref #1 & #15 ("molecular quasispecies (1988)"); How do I re-use the same reference again and remove the duplicate?. omermar 08:05, 21 February 2018 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Omermar (talk • contribs)

[edit]Could somebody please clarify in the Alternative Mathematical Formulation section the approximation , thanks! Posted March 2, 2008. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.90.180.147 (talk) 14:03, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
- is mentioned in the article as the new state after reproduction. The change per generation time is then . --Flinz (talk) 11:29, 5 August 2011 (UTC)
Technical/Accessibility
[edit]This page is rather technical; can someone who is an expert with the mathematics make it a little more accessible by either adding a section or providing a clearer explanation? As a biologist I'm not certain I'm qualified to translate it, though I think I understand. OcciMoron 15:10, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
- I am not an expert on the math but I spent a few years working in a lab with a couple of guys who were, and I think I picked up enough in discussions to make a reasonable English-language description. I've inserted a blurb at the top and added the section "Simplified Explanation". IdahoEv (talk) 08:54, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
Meaningless
[edit]The article uses versions of the phrase "the fitness of an individual genotype becomes meaningless" three times. This is a silly simplification of an observation about the functioning of a quasispecies. The genes that contribute to the survival of the quasispecies are fit; that is the definition of fit. The more fit the genes that make of the quasispecies, the more fit the quasispecies itself.
There is a true point to be made about the interaction of genes within the quasi-species. No individual gene is capable of self replication, so it is the combined effects of these genes that contribute to survival. This does not appear to be the point the article is making. This is still fitness of the individual, because the quasispecies is the environment of the gene. Randall Bart Talk 20:25, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
