This a great article but it isn't general enough. Quasi-phase-matching is a general technique that can be used in any nonlinear interaction in any medium - not just a two-wave mixing process in crystals. It can be implemented by creating a periodic structure in the nonlinearity of the medium, or, less commonly, the refractive index of the medium.
