Variant Spelling
[edit]I've encountered this word spelled, rather strangely, as "cwant", in print (specifically in the books of Arthur Ransome - Swallows and Amazons etc). Uncertain if it is just a regionalism or not.
"The operator stands at the back of the barge or punt"
[edit]I'm hesitant to change this, as I have no first-hand experience, but I always understood that one started each stroke near the bow. The article itself supports this when it says "The operator then walks down the side of the boat, facing aft and braced against the quant pole, the boat being propelled forward at the speed he walks". If he started his walk at the stern, he wouldn't have far to go. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.97.184.230 (talk) 00:15, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
