Plural vs. Singular

An anon editor has been striving to change the opening sentence from

The Quad Cities is a region of five cities

to

The Quad Cities are a region of five cities

They've done this twice now, and the last time, justified this with the following edit summary: "I changed “Is” to “Are” regarding the city’s state as a region. The rest of the article addresses the collective as “are” in relation to various things, it would be inappropriate to have conflicting pluralization"

Well, suffice it to say I don't think this person understands American English grammar. Rather than edit war, I come to the talk page, seeking others' opinions. Unschool 01:03, 5 August 2018 (UTC)

The noun that defines the verb in this sentence is region, not cities. Therefore, the correct usage is Is. There are two places in the article, where it does say the "Quad Cities are" in this context. They are both wrong. Even without the word Region being in those sentences, the singular term "Quad Cities" defines the use of Is or Are, not the plural of the word cities.

Again, to avoid an edit war I won't go in and change all three sentences right now, but they do need to be changed, because they are grammatically wrong. CleverTitania (talk) 05:38, 5 August 2018 (UTC)

Since it has been well over a week, and no one has expressed any justification for the use of Are in this context, I have gone through and changed the three different examples of "the Quad Cities are" which were grammatically wrong. Though obviously I left this sentence alone, "The predominant ethnicities in the Quad Cities are of northern European descent..." since the subject of the sentence is ethnicities not the Quad Cities. Updating Racial Data Section

Someone went in and change the racial percentages to arbitrary numbers, without providing any source for them. So obviously I reverted that. However the link to the Chamber of Commerce information that's on the current numbers is broken, and as far as I can tell, the most recent data they have on hand is from 2011 and is arranged by counties not cities.

So I was looking to see if there was another source that could give newer figures. And I found this page...

Which has data from 2015 ACS numbers, but I can't find a way to link to a report that is limited to specific cities. It defaults to all the counties in the region. But the info on that page does imply that the data we currently have significantly outdated. It lists the population of the five cities as 239,956, with a 10.5% African-American population. If that's accurate, it's a pretty far departure from the numbers we are currently showing on this page.

Anyone have a better source for the data, that is more current than 2011-2012, and wouldn't involve original research by just pulling the census data for the 5 cities and doing the math? Or are we probably going to have to wait until after the next decennial figures are put online? CleverTitania (talk) 01:19, 20 August 2018 (UTC)

Updates needed

This article seems to be badly out of date. For one thing, there's a big section on Amtrak service that was supposed coming early in this decade; that hasn't happened, as far as I can tell from the Amtrak site. Has the plan for service been cancelled, or is it still pending?

User:RossweisseSTL If you put a new section at the top of the page, and don't sign it, it's a good bet most people won't realize it's new.

The page is maintained fairly regularly, but the passenger rail project got gummed up when the last administration deprioritized it, and they had issues coordinating the track updates between BNSF and Iowa rail. However the project is still very much in the works.

I updated that section to clarify that the original projections for finishing it were not met, and links to more recent articles, which give some details on the source of the delays. I also linked the section to the the Moline Q Station wiki page - thought obviously that page also needs to be updated, because the building has been finished for nearly a year and the page still suggests it's under construction. Today is the first day of the semester, but I'll try to get to that page later tonight. CleverTitania (talk) 17:46, 14 January 2019 (UTC)

New Wikiproject Proposal

Hello, I've created a proposal for a Wikiproject to support articles relevant Quad Cities, if any of you want to look at the proposal and comment on it, it is here.

Addition/Removal of K-12 education section.

I am reverting a few edits which added a K-12 area to the Education section, and an explanation was too big for the editor's summary.

I checked the pages of several other major communities in the country which have a reason to have a detailed community pages like this one - including the Minneapolis Twin Cities, the Chicago and New York metro areas, etc. None of them have a couple of paragraphs on K-12 schools or public school districts in their area. Any information about the primary and secondary school systems in those regions is found on pages for their individual cities.

As best I can tell, all these details are already outlined adequately on our own individual city pages, so there's no reason to recreate any of the details on the QC page. The Education section exists on this page because the Quad Cities is a "college town." The several state, private and community colleges in the area are noteworthy to the community. The breakdown of primary schools in individual cities is not noteworthy.

If the original editor, or anyone else, disagrees, please discuss the topic here before adding the section back. CleverTitania (talk) 08:48, 12 July 2019 (UTC)

Reverted Changes from 9/9/21-9/10/21

I've just reverted several edits, too much to put in an edit summary. Firstly, superfluous and unsourced information was added to the intro paragraph, including tacking in East Moline and adding adjacent counties as part of the QC when they are not, without consensus or sources. These kinds of changes have been the subject of many conversations on the Talk page, and are as they are by consensus. Any changes of that scope should be discussed again before being made. Some promotional comments were also added, about what a broad business market the QC represents - along with links to the Chamber of Commerce - which were NPOV.

And two people were added to the "notable people" list who I could find no sources confirming they are from the QC, nor enough information to make them notable. Generally, if they are not notable enough to have a Wikipedia page, they should not be added to the list. CleverTitania (talk) 06:43, 12 September 2021 (UTC)
