Disko Island

[edit]

The greenlandic name of the Disko Island is Qeqertarsuaq, not as the title goes here: Qeqertarsuatsiaq. The name Qeqertarsuaq means The Large Island (Qeqertaq = Island, -suaq = large), and the main town on the island is named after the island. Cheers, Danielle dk 06:54, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've attempted to verify the information, and it appears to me too that Qeqertarsuatsiaq indeed does not refer to Disko Island. I've tried to verify the true identity of Qeqertarsuatsiaq, and unfortunately the answer is unclear, as I've found a number of references:
  • [1] not specified on map, seems an area on land near Fiskenæsset at approximately 63,08N 50,40W,
  • [2] Identifies it as a 'nedbo' (abandoned settelment?) at 68.15°N, 53.1°W
  • [3] identifies it as a steep cliff at 70,38;-54,8167

None of them match a small island in the Davis Strait, though it does not disprove of course that there is an island of that name there. Can anyone else offer more referenced information on this? Jens Nielsen 22:02, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Take a look at this map. You'll have to scroll your way to the Disko Island off the west coast, to the north of Disko there is a small island called Qeqertarsuatsiaq or Hareøen. There may, however, be more than one island with this name... Best regards, Danielle dk 10:57, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. I've confirmed that information here and here - apparently it is called 'hareøen' in Danish. I think we should rewrite the article to include all of these possible uses of the name. A question - do you know what a 'nedbo' is? Jens Nielsen 11:10, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Can't say that I do, sorry. Danielle dk 11:20, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I just browsed that above mentioned webpage where "nedbo" was found, and I think you are right that it's an abandoned settlement (nedlagt boplads). F.ex. Qullissat is categorized as 'nedby' (nedlagt by). Danielle dk 13:04, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
