Pyramiden is Swedish
[edit]The current text says:
- Pyramiden (Norwegian, meaning "the pyramid", Russian: Пирамида)
Although I'm sure the above statement is correct, since it was founded by Swedes, isn't Pyramiden then swedish? It has the same meaning in both languages. /I96danma 09:35, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
--Svalbard is a part of Norway. BZero 14:44, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
-- Which has absolutely no relevance. Sweden founded and named the city.
-- Then could someone please make a note of that? Its a bit confusing the way it is now. 212.17.87.133 17:45, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
Hi! Its swedish. 84.217.110.14 19:08, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
Swedish, Danish and Norwegian are all from the same group of Scandinavian languages and there are many similarities, especially between Swedish and Norwegian. Just happened that "the Pyramid" is the same in all 3 languages. Norum 07:05, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
- I updated the text to focus on that it is in Swedish "Pyramiden" means "the Pyramid", since that was the language used by the founding namers; while also noting this is true for other Scandinavian languages (since otherwise people will keep updating the text in the belief the article writer isn't aware this fact is true for Norwegian and Danish too). why was the settlement abandoned
[edit]Why was the settlement abandoned? It would be interesting and would be very relevant if someone could find this information.167.7.17.3 (talk) 15:10, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
It was inprofitable for the Russians to mine the coal, so they closed it. The coal is still there, but it's near the peak of the mountains. Norum 06:54, 25 February 2011 (UTC)
Umbreit reference
[edit]What does the reference Umbreit, 2009. Page 182. actually mean?
It sounds pretty far fetched that anyone would spend the time and money to go thousands of kilometers from the populated parts of the world to Pyramiden just to engage in vandalism? - Tournesol (talk) 16:20, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
- Page 182 in the book by Umbreit, which is listed under "bibliography". It is a popular place with tourists, and I don't find it unnatural that a small minority of them could engage in vandalism. Arsenikk (talk) 16:30, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
- I stand corrected. Having understood the reference, it was pretty easy to check with the source. - Tournesol (talk) 17:44, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
The vandalism in Pyramiden and other similar locations is of course much more subtle than in more accessible places, but it's still present and a problem as it deteriorates the buildings and destroys the "untouched charm" of the place. For example, there's graffiti in Pripyat, Chernobyl, and around the world in places like Pyramiden you can find initials of past visitors scratched on the walls.
I'm off the grid at the moment but I'll try to find more/better references when I return back to the civilization, or next year when I return to Svalbard and again get access to the university library where they have a pretty good selection of books about the history of the archipelago and its locations. - So why didn't you delete it?? Done. Most probably it was cut and paste error: somebody copied the template for the infobox, but did not remove the old content completely. - üser:Altenmann >t 03:59, 17 June 2016 (UTC)

Land ownership
[edit]Could the details of the land ownership be expanded upon? Currently the article lists the country as Norway, but is this technically correct? The only ownership listed is Sweden, which transferred it to the Soviet Union, and the tours are arranged by a Russian company, is the island de facto Russian or Norwegian? Fisk0 (talk) 15:36, 29 July 2023 (UTC)
- Svalbard is fully part of Norway, but a fraction of the land is owned by the Russian company Trust Arktikugol (e.g. Table 4.1 in [1]; note that the percentages may no longer be valid after the sale of Austre Adventfjord to the Norwegian state). This can certainly be clarified in the article if necessary. Tupsumato (talk) 18:47, 29 July 2023 (UTC)
