Push It Synopsis (Extended)

[edit]

The video begins with some French language public broadcast warning, and a audio-marked title card. At this point the "Push It" storyline begins, although the video may be an example of nonlinear narrative. At dawn, a masked female chained to a stuffed deer is seen standing in a deli parking lot. Three people, disguising themselves as nuns armed with crucifixes in holsters, arrive in a van and enter the building through a delivery access point. Inside, Manson is seen shopping with a partner, a rotoscoped "fuzzy" being; in his trolley is a stuffed raccoon. The nuns are seen entering the shop floor , and stalk the aisles before spotting the "fuzzy" being. Manson backs away to the company of her bandmates, as the nuns attack him with their crucifixes. He explodes in a burn-cut transition into the first chorus; here footage of two choreographed humanoid aliens, connected by a glowing head-growth, is intercut with footage of Garbage standing inside the plastic curtains of a refrigerated unit. After the chorus, the video moves to a Los Angeles street corner, where three triplet schoolboys, carrying a MacGuffin briefcase are tracking Manson on a hand-held video monitor. Manson recieves a phonecall on her cordless and is given it to answer by her next partner, a René Magritte-esque character with a lightbulb in place of a head. As Manson finishes a meal of sushi, the triplets arrive at her door and give her the briefcase. A second time, Mansons backs off into the reach of her bandmates, as the triplets attack her partner, smothering his light by covering his head. The triplets are then seen during the second chorus dancing with the "Lightbulb man" in an operating theater with three other children, all wrapped in bandages.

For the middle eight section of the song, footage of Manson shows her maternal activities with child-like versions of "Fuzzy" (teaching him how to cycle and tree-climb) and "Lightbulb man", who is fishing in an empty pond, playing catch and celebrating his fourth birthday. The band are seen for the last time as Manson leaves her children behind to walk through a graveyard towards a hooded man bringing her an over-sized balloon to add to the two balloons that she already has. As the chorus returns, footage of various non-related characters is shown: the earlier masked female and deer, two toddlers riding adults piggyback, two Asian businessmen fighting, a Navy Officer who alludes to a foot fetish, a naked woman waking from a bath of glowing water and a small girl surrounded by four paratroopers raising a toast. During the coda, the alien twins are seen again, walking down the deli aisles past displays stocked with live rabbits and chickens, and are seen spilling a liquid where they kneel, before guesturing the removal of a hood to the camera. The naked girl is seen again wandering throughout an empty hospital wing. The hooded character is later revealed to be Manson herself, unmasking herself in front of a mirror, before licking her own reflection. She is last seen leaving with the briefcase and her now-adult children in a Fiat 500. The video ends ominously with the words "Fine".[1]
