Area

[edit]
Extended content

There are some contradictory data on the area of the district:

  • "District background". Pulwama District, Government of Jammu and Kashmir. Archived from the original on 28 May 2014. Retrieved 17 December 2014.
    • Reporting area = 0.61 lac hectares. A lac = 100,000. So reporting area = 61,000 hectares (610 sq km).
  • "Demography", Pulwama District, Government of Jammu and Kashmir, retrieved 22 July 2020
    • Reporting area = 60,772 sq km

One of these has clearly got hectares confused with square kilometres. This kind of error is inherent in the metric system.

This map appears to show the district boundary - it is about 48 km long and 20 km wide. If it were a rectangle it would be 960 sq km - it is actually less than that. So an area of 610 sq km is possible. It looks like the Demography page says "sq km" when it means "ha". (It was so much easier when they used miles.)-- Toddy1 (talk) 07:21, 22 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The district also publishes another figure for its area: 1090 sq km.

  • "About District", Pulwama District, Government of Jammu and Kashmir, retrieved 22 July 2020

The Indian census also has a figure for the area of Pulwama district: 1,086 sq km. But it uses this figure for both 2011 and 2001 census data.

  • http://www.census2011.co.in/census/district/630-pulwama.html "Pulwama District", Population Census 2011 {{citation}}: |access-date= requires |url= (help)

The Indian census also has a figure for the area of Shopian district (it spells it "Shupiyan District"), which it says is 312 sq km. And it uses this figure for 2011 and 2001 census data.

  • www.census2011.co.in/census/district/631-shupiyan.html "Shupiyan District", Population Census 2011 {{citation}}: |access-date= requires |url= (help)

The Indian census's figure of 1,086 sq km for the area of Pulwama district is not that different from the district's reporting area figure of 980 sq km for its area before the creation of Shopian district.

The reduction in size of the reporting area Pulwama district after the creation of Shopian district was (using Pulwama district's figures) from 980 sq km to 610 sq km - a reduction of 370 sq km. This compares with the census's figure for the area of Shopian district of 312 sq km. But the Shopian District website says that Shopian District has an area of 612.9 sq km.

  • "About Shopian", Shopian District, Government of Jammu and Kashmir, retrieved 22 July 2020

The reporting area is the area for which data on land use classification are available.-- Toddy1 (talk) 09:57, 22 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
