Dives?

[edit]

T.R.S. Broughton, in his standard work The Magistrates of the Roman Republic, does not give "Dives" as an additional cognomen for this P. Licinius Crassus. The consul of 205 BC does have this cognomen; but it is debatable whether the cognomen was used for even the most famously rich Licinius Crassus (Marcus, the triumvir). One scholarly article on this is B.A. Marshall, "Crassus and the Cognomen Dives," Historia 22 (1973) 459–467. I don't necessarily put this forth as the most authoritative source, but as a place to start. Matthias Gelzer thought the consul of 97 did use the Dives; others have disagreed. This is a far less important point than the general chaos surrounding the organization of the Licinii Crassi in Wikipedia, to which this article contributes some clarity.
