Some of this seems to be lifted directly from another source
[edit]Specifically here: www.telecomspace.com/gsm.html I was googling for "mobile service node" and both pages come up with the same wording for most of the section that phrase is found in. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.59.188.108 (talk) 03:39, 9 February 2007 (UTC).
There's no practical definition of PLMN there, just generic statements
[edit]If I say that this article leaves me wondering what PLMN really is, I'll say nothing. IMHO it's just a useless set of phrases, words, letters and punctuation signs. In practice, on Siemens' MSC/VLR/HLR, PLMN is identified by MCC+MNC prefix (Mobile Country Code + Mobile Network Code). What this means is that a GSM PLMN is a national network of one physical GSM operator. For example, UAUMC (25501 IMSI prefix) is one PLMN that hosts 3 virtual ukrainian GSM operators - MTS UA, JEANS and Ekotel. Alternatively, Siemens' MSC/VLR/HLR may identify PLMN by CC+NDC (Country Code + National Destination Code), and for the abovementioned example this means that MTS UA, Ekotel and JEANS are different PLMNs, which is not true :). And in general, better definition of PLMN would be IMHO to say that different PLMNs just define different roaming networks. -- xrgtn (talk) 21:43, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
- This sounds like a FCC/US Government regulatory term, not an industry term, nobody calls their cellphone "Commercial Mobile Radio Service" or their cable company a "Multiple System Operator". Patcat88 (talk) 06:36, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
- I believe the term PLMN originally appeared in the ITU-T Specs. It is also described in the GSM Specs, e.g. GSM 01.02 [1]. The doctor23 (talk) 20:47, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
