Terminology

Sorry for any errors as I am new to editing Wikipedia, but I have to object to the merging of the 'psychic distance' and 'psychical distance' references. As an academic scholar with several publications on the issue of psychic distance, I can assure you there is no linkage between the two. I have read close to ever major article on psychic distance in the international business literature and I have never before heard any linkage with psychical distance, nor the book by King. I think you have mistakenly merged two distinct constructs. The term psychic distance (within the international business literature) was coined by Beckerman, then cited by Linneman and popularized by the Upsalla school of scholars (Johanson, Vahlne & Weidershiem-Paul). I am not sure how to go about it, but I believe the two should be separated again. IB Scholar (talk) 10:27, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi IB Scholar, thanks so much for bringing it to the talk page before dividing it again. Psychical distances comes up on google searches and psychic distance is the marketing coinage. Psychic distance redirects here and I'm wondering if there's a case for explaining the difference early on in the article and linking to an article on "psychic distance" if you feel the distinction is clear. Your references seem strong so that's the first quality for a separate article. If you feel able to split them up without confusion and making the problem evident within the text, they can perhaps show "see also" in each article. Part of the problem might be that the lay person who comes to wikipedia can be confused by the term "psychic distance" because it has other associations. If you need any help, ask, but if you feel you have a good case, go ahead imho. Cheers, Julia Rossi (talk) 22:24, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi Julia. I can easily write (or rewrite) a section on psychic distance (that is my area of expertise as an academic) but I must admit I had never even heard of psychical distance before these two were linked together in Wikipedia. As a result, I am rather hesitant to play with the psychical part. —Preceding unsigned comment added by IB Scholar (talkcontribs) 04:04, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi again, two suggestions: if it's just a wikipedic add-on way back in the article, it's possible to reconstruct the article as "Psychic distance" and move it to a new title. The best place to ask for steps might be the Help desk for using wikipedia. I won't be around much in the next few days, but be bold if you can substantially make it over. The other alternative I can think of is to click on the red link here to make a sandbox page of your own where you write it and get some feedback on your work beforehand. I moved it to Psychic distance. Bhny (talk) 21:23, 22 September 2012 (UTC)
