'The marked rise in the number of Protestants in the last decennium is owing to a boom in conversions among the Bulgarian Roma, attributed to the relative poverty of the community and the lavish financing of the Protestant denominations in Bulgaria, mostly from the United States.'
The above sentence is highly arbitrary and extremely insulting to Roma - both Protestant and non. Who "attributes" the boom in conversions among Roma to their relative poverty and lavish financing of Protestant denominations "mostly from the United States"? Such a statement should include a reference. It implies that Roma people are easily swayed by money and are not intelligent enough to make their own decisions about their faith - a prejudice they have been fighting against for centuries. Who is entitled to make a judgement about why they convert (as opposed to the Bulgarians who convert to Islam, for example, or Orthodox who became atheist) - especially in a encyclopedia article which should be objective?
Kamen: I know some Roma believers. Their conversion has nothing to do with "lavish fiancing of the Protestnat denominations." The leaders in the church were evangelized as children by a Bulgarian lady who would visit them in their village many years ago. Now they have their own church and are self supported. Many of them are making relatively good money in construction.
