[edit]

This article is inaccurate. Proskynesis (or the infinitive, proskynein) means "to fall at/before the knees". See the applicable page in Woodhouse, which happens to include both "kiss" and "knee". http://artflx.uchicago.edu/cgi-bin/efts/dicos/woodhouse_test.pl?keyword=^Kiss,%20subs.

Also, any discussion of the proskynesis which fails to mention the Byzantine Empire (after Constantine), Justinian or Otto Treitinger is clearly deficient.

Pronunciation?

[edit]

I've put the pronunciation into IPA. I'm not sure if it's correct (it looks correct to me, but can someone else have a look at it, just to doublecheck?) The previous example was phonetic 'pross-kin-ee-sis', so I've put it into proper IPA, taken from similar related words on wiktionary. Also, I'm not sure if the template (en) is correct. Etymology question

[edit]

Noticed that the following had been inserted into the article by 68.49.250.150, thought I should move it to the talk page.

"Check this. I believe the etymology you are presenting is incorrect. Check the root, KYNOS, ancient word for DOG. It's to assume the posture of a dog."

From the word προς, meaning 'towards to' and κυνέω, meaning 'to kiss'. [1]Stroumel (talk) 16:13, 13 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Kallistos (Timothy)

[edit]

The opinion of Kallistos (Timothy) in the article („In the Eastern Orthodox Church the term proskynesis is used theologically to indicate the veneration given to icons and relics of the saints; as distinguished from latria, the adoration which is due to God alone”) is a frank fiction. The expression „τιμητικήν προσκύνησιν” in the dogma of the Second Council of Nicaea is not „veneration”, but „respectful worship”. In Latin, it looks like „honorariam adorationem”. Philip Schaff writes about this: „The Nicene Council nullified the decrees of the iconoclastic Synod of Constantinople, and solemnly sanctioned a limited worship (proskynesis) of images.”Wlbw68 (talk) 09:47, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
