School colors

The current sidebar claims the school colors are black and gold, while the trivia section claims they are black and cadmium yellow deep. While the latter seems more appropriate for a school with such a strong visual arts program, gold should be easier to understand for the lay audience. --Jarsyl (talk) 07:10, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

CCTV trivia

As of this writing, the trivia section contains a short description of the campus CCTV station, including this sentence: "Until recently, the channel was home to a blank VCR screen." I take this to mean that until "recently", whatever that means, no content was broadcast on this station. Anyone else think this should be deleted? --Jarsyl (talk) 07:07, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

Modular construction

"Cannoneer Court, or "The Can" was designed by famed architecture firm SOM in 1986 and constructed using a then-unique form of modular construction. Each individual dorm room was constructed off-site and then set into place like building blocks." ---I think the words "then-unique" are misleading if not untrue. Many other architects experimented with pre-assembled modular units in the 1960s and 70s, notably those associated with the Metabolist movement in Japan (e.g. Kisho Kurokaka's Nakagin Capsule Tower, 1972), but also Moshe Safdie's "Habitat '67," 1967. There's no need to give SOM more credit than they already claim for themselves.

Possible copyright infringement: I noticed the "History" section is lifted verbatim from Pratt's website, this would appear to be a copyright violation. At the very least it could be rewritten to be more in the tone of wikipedia. I doubt Pratt students or alums would approve of plagarsim of this magnatude... Taco 20:45, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Alumni content

Can we cut it with the Vanity articles.

No one needs to know who founded a specific activity/dept/etc unless that person is of notable value.

Hi everyone,

Please provide information about people you are putting in the Notable Alumni and Former Students section. If they have a Wikipedia page, link to it and make sure it's the correct page if there is more than one person by that name. If they don't have a Wikipedia page, please list a short description with their name, like "painter", "architect", "chair designer" or what have you. If they don't have any imformation that can connect us to who they actually are, odds are they're not going to stay on the page. See previous discussions below for examples of misunderstandings that were resolved both ways.

People who are listed that have no supporting information are likely to be removed unless we can figure out who they are and why they are notable. This is especially true in posts that originate from Pratt servers.

The link for "Margaret Lee" connected me to a dead friend of Queen Anne Boleyn. A google search came up with so many names it was impossible to figure out which was being referred to. If you mean to re-instate the link, please provide details about her, and a short Wikipedia page for her if possible. Ms ArtGeek 18:57, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

• Sorry, to clarify: though I don't think it hurts the article to have the description for all of them, I mostly meant the above for new articles that have no links... And thank you to the person who added the descriptor tags... I assumed that a linked name with an article attached would be enough, but maybe it is better this way for consistency. In the Notable Alumni and Former Students section, I removed the links for anyone who does not at present have a Wikipedia page. Seeing as hundreds of talented artists, designers, and architects graduate and/or leave school each year there, It's hard to put someone in the same list as "known" artists such as Paul Rand, Daniel Clowes, Jules Feiffer, Max Weber, Robert Wilson, and Robert Mapplethorpe, even They Might Be Giants or Rob Zombie. It's also my guess that the 207.xx IP addresses, being addresses that I believe come from Pratt's domain (they are 204s and 207s IIRC), further give evidence of my belief that these are current or recent students trying to get some free self promotion. I can understand the motive but Wikipedia is not a venue for self-promotion. If someone would like to write an article about said people, and show the Wikipedian community why the names merit being in the list, well, that would give us something more to work with. Jeremy Scott's Wikkipedia page is not up yet. I wrote it a while back and it’s still pending. Jeremy Scott is one of Pratt's most successful fashion alumni. You should do research about the people before you remove their names from the list. I promise he's not self promoting. And he is a very important member of the Pratt alumni.

Just click on the dead link of his name in the article and it will bring up the necessary page to drop your text into.

Or search for Jeremy Scott in the Search box, and (having no article of that name) it will take you to a page where you can create that page or request it.

It will come up with no article of that name and give you the option to create one. Copy your text into the box and submit it. If you know how to Wikify and format properly, do that as well. If you don't, someone else probably will. Ms ArtGeek 19:41, 22 February 2006 (UTC)Ms_ArtGeek

The only Ben Duarte I can find that has a connection to Pratt is 19 years old, and started studying there in 2004 (according to this MySpace page: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=9044908 ). note: i removed "Roger Sanchez", "Jacqueline Lamont", and "Jeremy Scott" from the "notable alumni" list because they are linked to vanity pages. i also removed "Robert Wilson" because it wasn't disambiguated from the list of 10 or so articles by that name. i also removed "stellastarr" because it is a link to an obscure band and also because it is not a link to an individual.

i added some information after each "alumni" regarding their claim to "notability". hopefully this helps a bit with keeping track of links to vanity pages.

I think its time to break out the list into a stand alone list/article, and remove this material from the main article. I also am not sure if every person in the associated category is also listed here, vice versa. i added a category for pratt institute people, which is empty, for notable faculty, as thats standard for a lot of colleges herre.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 02:33, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

Pratt's engineering department (now defunct)

If anyone has any information on the (now defunct) engineering department, this would be a great section to add. If memory serves me correctly, the department was closed during the institute's fiscal crisis in the 80's. Pratt's Engineering department, similar to the Art & Design and Architecture departments, was among the best in the country at one time.

A notable engineering related bit of trivia/pratt urban legend: the 16th century spanish cannon (for which the Pratt athletics team "the Cannoneers" is named) near the Dekalb/Hall St. entrance used to point at the Library. At some point students from the engineering department flipped it around to point at the Bursar's office.

The engineering dept was actually closed in 1993 when the Schutee took over, the reason being related to focusing on the more popular and progressive majors. that's what his wife told me when i was giving an alumni a tour.
