"Thakre" original surname
[edit]I couldn't verify this statement ...but decided to give his son the surname "Thakre", which was apparently their traditional family name before their ancestors moved to Dhodap...", at least a basic online search was not productive. Most of the sources were relatively new, way after this was added here so could be a case of mirroring our content. The book sources I tried searching through provided in that edit ended with no luck, just one book remained which was entirely offline. I tagged it cn for now.
So conclusion: plenty of sources say it's an anglicisation of the British author name, only few sources talk of "Thakre" but are likely to have copied it from here since they're dated to 2012. Ugog Nizdast (talk) 13:52, 5 February 2016 (UTC)
- As the article states, it's from the autobiography of Keshav Thackeray (माझी जीवनगाथा; if you understand Marathi, see pages 7-11). It's also covered in third-party sources dating before 2012 (e.g. Thackeray, life & style cited in that version, page 24).
- In 2012, it was covered by several newspapers, because Digvijaya Singh used Keshav Thackeray's theory about north Indian origin of CKPs to claim that the Thackeray family was from outside Maharashtra. utcursch | talk 15:52, 5 February 2016 (UTC)

- Interesting. Could you address that cn tag since you've read it? Thackeray, life & style searching the terms "Thakre", "Panvelkar" etc yield nothing still. Ugog Nizdast (talk) 14:11, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
- The author of that book doesn't discuss Panvelkar or anglicization inspired by William Makepeace Thackeray. The book simply states that the family added "Dhodapkar" to their original surname "Thackeray". That's why searching for "Thakre" produces zero results.
- In Devanagari, there would be no distinction between "Thackeray" and "Thakre", and English wasn't widely used in earlier days. So, technically, one could claim that "Thackeray" was the family's original surname. But "Thackeray" is obviously an anglicized spelling: other CKPs/Marathi people still use "Thakre" (e.g. Manikrao Thakre, Waman Thakre, Kushabhau Thakre etc.)
- There are other sources that contain details about the anglicization, and distinguish between Thakre and Thackeray. I'll add those to the article. utcursch | talk 21:42, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
- By the way, I found this -- Sujata Anandan thinks that Prabodhankar's claim of his ancestors being Thakre (i.e. feudal lords) is fake. Not sure if it's WP:FRINGE or worthy of being included in the article. utcursch | talk 22:17, 6 February 2016 (UTC)
- I think it's undue. Anyway that solves the problem. Ugog Nizdast (talk) 06:23, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
- Dear utcursch, Sujata Anandan launches personal and false attacks on all pro-hindu right wing parties including bjp. She does not seem to have much knowledge of castes or it is obvious she has not done much research. Sujata Anandan is an incompetent immature low class journalist IMO if she is using his caste to attack him for his pro-marathi stance. She seems to be a very vindictive and virulent (negative) personality. She "conveniently forgot" that the word prabhu itself means high official and many CKPs were fort governors and statesmen. kayastha in the north is not the same as CKP and I am going nuts when people confuse the two and having to explain the same thing again and again. I wonder if she knows Baji Prabhu Deshpande or that the prabhus were one of the most educated marathi castes in maharashtra( as per Omvedt). Is that the same for the illiterates from UP who come to maharashtra loaded in trains and harass the local marathi girls? Are these people an elite community like the CKPs? Secondly, British Census (although we do not cite this on wikipedia - does say that thakre is derived from Thakur) and that the word prabhu word means 'lord'. Raj thakray himself said in an interview (on youtube), that he is not against north Indians and will welcome with a red carpet anyone like Munshi Premchand. That is why I avoid journalist opinions on caste issues - they are biased against politicians most of the times and intentionally defame their castes. Here is she is attacking his family. This time she went to a new low by attacking his caste. Typical pro-congress stooge-she puts lies as though they are facts. My study of marathi castes (in great depth) does not support her views at all. She is a hidutva basher IMO. I want to make clear that I do not like Raj thakrey and his uncle at all - manipulative politicians. Also, they seem to have more maratha supporters than other caste supporters - probably due to their admiration for Shivaji(which is valid- Shivaji was a great king). But just because I do not like these politicians or their supporters does not mean that I will bash their castes (maratha or CKP). Other CKP authors have severely criticized Thakre https://www.khaleejtimes.com/editorials-columns/the-other-bal-thackeray and Dr.Hemachandra Gupte , Mayor of Bombay left Thakrey because of the violence of the shiv sena.Acharya63 (talk) 07:30, 14 March 2018 (UTC)
- It seems to be fashionable these days to personally bash any one who shows love for hinduism.Acharya63 (talk) 10:51, 14 March 2018 (UTC)
Anti-caste?
[edit]It is ironic that he is remembered as an opponent of the caste system, when so much of his writing was in defense of his own caste. He was certainly anti-Brahmin, which was natural in light of a Brahmin author's belittling of his (Thackeray's) caste. Llajwa (talk) 18:30, 8 September 2024 (UTC)
