Facts?
[edit]Hi, firstly I'm new to this so I hope this makes sense..... previous to reading this article I had read about the dangers of drinking excessive amounts of water here on Wikipedia, and from my perspective it was well written and backed up by references. I then come to this article and one 'fact' reported here that surprised me very much was that a normal adult can drink 20 litres of water and it be safe. I find this hard to believe. I also noticed that there doesn't seem to be much direct reference to external sources. Does this make sense? What would be the next step to better this article? - The user who wrote that "a normal adult can drink up to 20 litres (4.4 imp gal; 5.3 US gal) per day of water without becoming hyponatremic" was probably referencing this article. It seems that they have interpreted the data point "water excretion rate of normal adult kidneys can exceed 20 L/day" (Verbalis et al., 2007) to mean that an adult with healthy kidneys can safely drink 20 L/day. This is an overgeneralization and does not take into account the fact that one can experience acute hyponatremia by quickly drinking far more water than the kidneys can excrete in a short amount of time. The pathophysiology section of this article could be improved with a more precise explanation of the pathogenesis of hyponatremia, i.e. having too much water than your kidneys can handle means that you're at risk of severely diluting the sodium in your body.
