Rights
[edit]Does anyone know the rights of a Portuguese citizen? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Chuck61007 (talk • contribs)
- Wikipedia is not a discussion forum, but you might try looking at the Constitution of Portugal. Part I is titled, "Fundamental rights and duties". -- Boracay Bill (talk) 00:54, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
Jewish Law of Return
[edit]There appears to have been a change in the practical application of this. I have knowledge of it, but no source; if there is a source this information could be added to the article.
According to the law it is only necessary to prove Sephardic ancestry, not practising. But a certificate supporting ancestry is required from a Jewish community authority in Portugal. While I don't think the law has changed, the attitude of the Jewish authorities has. From a specific case of two brothers who applied with (expensive) support from specialised lawyers, one several years ago and one in late 2021: in the earlier case some issues were raised about the brothers' parents not having a certificate of a Jewish wedding, but the Jewish authorities ultimately recognised Jewish ancestry and citizenship was granted (after the usual wait of many months). In the recent application, the Jewish authorities are refusing to certify Sephardi ancestry if the parents' religious marriage certificate cannot be supplied. The same lawyer acted for both brothers, and reports this as a change to the rules applied, rather than random differences between treatment of different cases. Maybe there are sources to support this? I don't know of any. 212.105.168.202 (talk) 13:52, 14 January 2022 (UTC)
- There was no change to the law, that particular paragraph has stayed the same, down to the commas, since it was introduced. Those are all the existing versions of the nationality law. That aspect of the law has always been controversial in some circles, and there was a proposal last year in Parliament to restrict its reach, and some strong comments from the Minister of Justice also last year. The situation has escalated following the recent confirmation of Abramovich's Portuguese nationality. Obviously. That was a big scandal, even Navalny commented on it. Maybe that's why applicants are noticing changes, but without a reliable source stating that, it would count as original research. RetiredDuke (talk) 19:38, 14 January 2022 (UTC)
