ERE/Byz. labels?
[edit]What is the meaning of the difference between the first 3 entries in the table (labeled "Eastern Roman Empire") and the remainder (labeled "Byzantine Empire")?
On purely historical grounds, one might argue for making such a change somewhere in the table. But the "very Greek" phase seems to come later than the table recognizes. In particular, Justinian's reign retained a strongly ["Western"] Roman character, so one might expect the entries for 540 and 565 to be given the "ERE" label.
Alternatively, why have these labels at all? It's the same, albeit evolving, empire. (And the labels' title, "Area", does not help at all.) Jmacwiki (talk) 22:45, 8 March 2009 (UTC)
