According to the sources listed in the lede, 20k at its peak. But first, this included many "passive" members - most of this underground stuff was very much unlike the movies, you signed up, you might hold some illegally printed newspapers or something in your house for a day or two, and that was the extent of your activity. Or you were simply sought after by the Gestapo on account of your social status and the Griffin helped you hide - you were then a "member". Second, my personal opinion is that, even accounting for that, the number is probably somewhat exaggerated. While they were significant, and they were quite active - especially given the circumstances (they operated in areas that were mostly thoroughly controlled by the Germans, unlike in GG or Kresy) - understandably they, and some of the involved people writing about them after the war had a stake in making the numbers seem as big as possible. This was partly because the communist authorities tried to minimize their importance (strangely enough, if anyone has seen the popular (in Eastern Europe) TV show Four tank men and a dog, which was more or less a communist propaganda piece, the Gryf is portrayed/referred to positively there).
