Can we be certain that there were two Pollieni Auspeces? According to Géza Alföldy, Konsulat und Senatorenstand unter der Antoninen Bonn: Rudolf Habelt Verlag (1977), p. 204 & note, there was no such person during the reign of Marcus Aurelius, & all the offices & actions attributed to the senior Pollienus Auspex should be assigned to the younger. I believe the current scholarly consensus is that there were indeed two Pollieni Auspeces; the controversy revolves around what offices each held by whom and when. Mennen's work was published in 2011, whereas Alföldy's work is nearly 40 years old, so I would tend to follow the newer source. In support of Mennen, Anthony Birley notes in Kaiser, Heer und Gesellschaft in der Römischen Kaiserzeit: Gedenkschrift für Eric Birley (2000), p. 113 & Note 50, that there were two individuals, and that the elder may have held an office under the reign of Marcus Aurelius. See Kaiser, Heer und Gesellschaft in der Römischen Kaiserzeit - p 113. It may be worthwhile to expand the article and include more of the points under debate in the article rather than a footnote, but I don't believe the existence of 2 Pollieni Auspeces (father and son) is debated any more.
