Podolsze
[edit]I have visited Podolsze twice: 1984 and 1994. My grandfather, Josef Kurzak, was born there and emigrated to Buffalo, New York early 1900's. He married Helen in 1914, and she was from Przymsl. She always kidded him that he was from a small farm town (which it is) and she was from the city.
Our Buffalo family had long lost contact with our family roots in Podolsze; but one day, Aniela Kurzak, wrote a letter to my mother (Irene) and the trip to Poland was on. Aniela's husband was my mothers biological uncle; and she had no clue that her dad's brother was yet alive. We discovered a huge family had survived WWII; and were overwhelmed with the warm turnout of family members from the region of Podolsze. Stories filled the air and family history revealed. My mother's first cousin, Adam Kurzak, was the most animated and eager to connect and share his life with us. I'll never forget the huge bouraki he dug up from the garden and proudly displayed. The trip was terrically impressive from the standpoint of family reunion after 80 years of separation! In 1994 I took my husband to Podolsze for another visit; and the experience was a repeat of my first experience there. The area is very beautiful. A nearby lake is filled with waterfowl. Many storks occupy nests over chimneys. The fields are lush green. And the homes are neat and tidy. We look forward to going again for another visit.
