Notability
[edit]I can add more info to this, and dig up the old newspaper articles, but I am not sure how that will help the "notability" requirement. This spectacle is basically the same thing as Santacon (which has a wikipedia entry) and is even run by the same people, and is larger than most cities' Santacons, so IMHO if Santacon gets an entry, Plunderathon should too.
I think this is more an issue of my lack of skill at creating a wiki than an issue with the subject itself.
Thoughts? Let's at least try to fix this before resorting to deletion.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.34.89.191 (talk • contribs) 16:25, May 1, 2007
- Hi, I'm not entirely sure this is notable either, but it sounds like fun and I did some cleanup on the article. As far as your arguments about notability, you should be aware that saying other stuff exists doesn't really work. It's up to you to prove notability by citing your sources. Be sure to study WP:NOTE. The {{notability}} tag doesn't automatically lead to deletion, it's more like a friendly reminder to improve the article. I don't know how the editor who tagged the article feels about it, you might ask him/her. Happy editing and you might think about signing up for an account. Katr67 19:11, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I forgot to log in (new guy error #1,293 it seems), so the edits I made were unsigned. I agree that "other stuff exists" is a poor argument; chalk it up to pre-coffee ramblings I guess. I am admittedly biased because I attend this event myself every year, but I believe this is at least locally notable (though dozens of people fly in to the city from out of state to attend) due to its size, visibility, impact on the community and general uniqueness. The wiki guidelines seem mainly to deal with "was this covered by outside sources," which it has been (the state's main newspaper, some local papers, bunch of fairly uncitable blogs, two radio stations, etc, none of which was advertising in nature or the result of a press release). The wiki guidelines also state that notability is synonymous with "attracting notice," and trust me, 200 drunken pirates with real weaponry blocking off the streets in the downtown financial district of the state's largest city during a summer afternoon attracts notice. And police presence.
The notability tag was added before most of the text that is there now was created, so perhaps the person who tagged it will reconsider at some point.--Davethehorrible 19:44, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
