Planet Earth ??

[edit]

I just wanted to record somewhere that "Planet Earth" was a phrase that didn't exist in everyday English language (and likely didn't exist in many other languages) before December 1968.

Though we knew it was a planet, nobody actually thought of "Earth" as a planet. The solar system contained the Sun, Earth, and 7 or 8 planets. For example, Gustav Holst's ["The Planets"] only contains 7 movements - Pluto hadn't been discovered when he was composing.

What changed everything was Apollo 8. It wasn't the first time Earth had been photographed from space vehicles, but it was the first time Man had gone far enough from Earth to be able to look back and see it, and realise that it's blue and white and beautiful. It was a surprise. None of the 8 planets we knew were blue at all. Most of the world watched some TV over Christmas 1968, and saw that view of Earth, and it completely changed how we thought of Earth, now we knew it was the only blue planet. Many westerners, religious or not, found the Bible reading to be sort of appropriate; that was the kind of mood the event generated.

That's the way it was. L0ngpar1sh (talk) 17:33, 1 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

planet Earth vs. Planet Earth

[edit]

I was hoping to find out when one would use the term planet Earth vs. Planet Earth, aside from the title of a show, etc. 2604:2000:F209:2700:5976:C95D:8A98:43CF (talk) 01:09, 28 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

One would never use "Planet Earth" except in the title of something, since we don't randomly capitalize nouns for no reason.  — SMcCandlish ¢ >ʌⱷ҅ʌ<  11:46, 18 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
