. I was born and bread in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. I am a Piney. The term is no longer derogatory as the article mentions. It is not however used by the residents who proudly claim to be Pineys the same as someone who claims to be a redneck. Redneck is a general term encompassing people from many different locations who live a similar lifestyle. Piney is a term used to denote our specific location and heritage. Pineys come in all shape, sizes, with varying lifestyles, education, and income. We are very proud people mainly due to the successes of our ancestors who worked hard to preserve this very valuable and beautiful land known as the Pine Barrens.
